"Mr. Hoffman provided a detailed sketch, including a chart that showed what would be planted where. He worked with us on an additional detail that we ultimately decided not to incorporate. He went with us to a place that sold pavers, to help us make a selection. He told us when the work would be scheduled. He showed up when he said he would. The crew worked each day until the project was completed. The finished product is beautiful, and definitely looks even nicer than we would have expected. The project came in on budget, except for a last-minute extra we requested."

"I would give an A+ to Kyle and his landscaping crew for planting a beautiful garden along with two white pine trees. The grass against the back of my house was bare in spots and there seemed to be erosion of the soil. Kyle responded to my request for an estimate very quickly. He is very much a gentleman and professional. He met with me and he suggested a variety of deer resistant, low-maintenance plants for the garden. Then he e-mailed a professional design for my approval. Wow! I asked for one plant substitution and he sent three alternatives right away. Some regrading was done and he added some stones which are so functional and attractive! Two full, healthy white pines were planted at the end of the property. The crew worked hard to complete the job. Very nice gentlemen! I was very impressed with the stunningly beautiful work that was performed. I am so happy with the transformation to the back of my house and the price was quite fair and reasonable. I would highly recommend Kyle to be your landscaper."

"It was an incredible experience. He does relining of chimneys. He was incredible. The fire box repair was like $2400 which was reasonable. I got several estimates and they were the most reasonable. Everything was done professionally. When they were finished there was no clean up. I'm a real estate agent so you know they've got to be good."

Customers say: True professional

"This was the third time in one year that we’ve hired MD Legacy for a major landscaping job, and just like before, they totally knocked it out of the park! We came up with our own special design for a new stone garden wall, and they worked creatively and tirelessly to bring our vision to life. Even when the stone supplier delivered the wrong materials the day before, Eric rectified the situation as quickly as possible—and the very talented crew (Carlos, Jose, and Eric’s dad Reggie) worked extra long the second day to finish on time. The finished wall perfectly complements the shape of our property, and we can’t wait to start planting in it. And on top of their impeccable work, the whole team is so friendly and considerate—Jose even took the extra step of using a blower on all the cars down the street to make sure they were clean from any stone dust. We’re already looking forward to them coming back soon for the next improvement!"

"I called JES Foundation Company for a free inspection of my crawl space. I was concerned about a crack in my foundation wall. JES inspector Richard Sheman Showed up to inspect my foundation. He sent a text with the time of his arrival. He was pleasant and on time. He went into my crawlspace and inspected the crack in the wall and stated I had nothing to worry about. He was very knowledgeable about the foundation and itâ  s structure. He explain to me how I could fix the superficial settling crack and save a bunch of money. I appreciate the honesty of the business and I would recommend it to anyone who had the same concerns, and for any of their other services. Ron P Home owner."

"Carlos Ruano, the owner of the company, worked along side his team to replace the broken rails and the interior wire on our split rail fence.  We also had him replace rotting posts and broken rails elsewhere as after ten years they are failing. (We had another company install the original fence in 2001).
They used top quality materials, worked fast, removed the old materials, and left teh job site clean.

Customers say: Quality work

"We really enjoyed our experience with HL Design. Dave put time and effort into his initial proposal. His proposal was very detailed with additional recommendations to enhance the overall look of our hardscaping. This far exceeded any proposal we received. The price was very reasonable and he even through in some additional azaleas. They started right away once we decided on the pavers and the project was completed in three full days. Project was well done and they cleaned up the site afterwards, replanted grass, and we were very pleased with the entire project."

"Outdoor advantage did a superb job. They removed a large (20x12) fish pond that had been in place for over 30 years. They had to haul away about 6 tons of field stone then create a flat and level surface for the pool. They then seeded and put straw down on the bare area. They showed up on time and finished at the end of the day. Outdoor advantage is my go to company for any landscaping project. I've used them many times and wouldn't hesitate to use them in the future."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

A fireplace hearth is a fireproof flooring material that extends out from the base of the fireplace and into the room. Hearths can be made of brick, ceramic, marble, limestone, and more. A hearth serves the purpose of decreasing the fire risk in the area directly around the fireplace. If flying embers hit carpet or wood, they’ll spark and create a fire. But if they hit something like tile or granite, they’ll simply go out.

The best way to clean creosote from brick is to hire a professional chimney sweep. However, you can use a creosote log to remove excess buildup between cleanings. You can also clean minor creosote buildup using dish soap or vinegar mixed with water.

Yes, concrete is significantly stronger than masonry, especially if the concrete pour includes reinforcements, like steel rebar. Concrete is a uniform material that can withstand compression, sheer force, and tensile force as long as it’s reinforced. Masonry involves the use of mortar or grout to connect individual building materials, like brick, stone, or tile. Mortar and grout are also reasonably strong and resist compression well, but they don’t come close to the strength of poured concrete.

In some cases, black stains on brick are caused by organic substances like algae and mold. However, it's more likely that the black spots you're noticing on your bricks come from carbon from vehicle exhaust or soot. Black stains can usually be removed by scrubbing the brick with a brush and masonry cleaner or power washing.

Cobblestone can be made from many different types of stones but the most common ones, by far, are granite, basalt, limestone, and sandstone.  If you are laying a brick paver patio or other such project, the medium is different. It’s rare, but cobblestone can also be made from marble, slate, jasper, and other types of rock. Technically, you can make cobblestone from almost any type of rock, but if it is weather-resistant and stands the test of time is another question entirely.
