"We used VKB after getting a whole bunch of quotes and estimates and designers, and Sean, our VKB designer was the only one who was able to take our vision and match it with our budget. The stock cabinets they had were much better than any of the other contractor groups, and were a big source of savings. Our project manager, Polo was able to keep us informed every step of the way and even when there was an issue, he kept us up to date on the status. When Home Depot lost our floor delivery, or when the quartz color we had picked was not currently in stock, he worked his best to keep the project moving, and keep us in the loo and able to stay on target. Erci was our “boots on the ground” guy, who was just fantastic. He and his crew were the best group of workers we could have asked for. They were so efficient, and did so much for us that made the flow in the kitchen even better. If we do any other remodel, it will be with these guys because Erci and his crew were that good."

"Daniel and his partner installed new appliances and tile in my kitchen, I had new counter tops installed as well in my kitchen and master bathroom. I also used John Krause for a repair to my shed from water damage again Daniel and his partner did an excellent job for me. Very please with Daniel and his work. I believe Daniel is a sub-contractor for John Krause, but none the less in my opinion he did really good work and communicated with every step of the way."

"We had a horrendous situation with a basement floor installation that went wrong leaving our house full of fumes, and a week later we discovered our basement was contaminated by asbestos in the process.  When we called Bill and Contractors Unlimited, they were extremely responsive.  Although other companies gave us bids, Bill was able to work his schedule to fit us in weeks sooner than the others.  Although the cost was a bit more, that saved us money because we were displaced and could not even go into our house because of the fumes.  CU set up negative air machines to replace the air, they followed asbestos abatement laws, they cleaned every item that could be salvaged in our house.  They even saved more than we thought which really reduced our overall expense.  Bill and his team were extremely professional, friendly, helpful, and really went out of their way to ease our stress from this situation.  At the end of their process, Bill arranged for a air quality inspection which we happily passed - able to return home.  I would gladly recommend Contractors Unlimited for asbestos abatement.  I just wish we had called them before the floor guys  created such a disaster.  Thank you Bill!

"The issue and the search for a fix:
We have an old builder grade Wayne Dalton two car garage door. The curved arm attached to garage door from the lift-master system came off and there was no easy way to attach it back correctly. Also the springs on the door had lost tension which is probably why there was so much weight on the arm that it broke off. We checked with several garage door companies. We got one of two standard responses from most of them. They either suggested we replace our entire garage door, as in their words the Wayne Dalton garage doors we have are really terrible quality and are no longer made and its worth the investment to get new ones rather than invest in fixing these. The cost for this would be roughly 1200 or so. The other response was that we would be charged a fee for them to come do an in-home estimate to correctly diagnose the problem. If we did go with the company that did the estimate they would of course put that fee towards our total bill. I did not much like that alternative either because i'm in the habit of getting multiple quotes before i decide on a company or contractor i like so i was likely to lose a bunch of estimate fees before i found the right contractor.
Stoneberger and our experience with them:
Stoneberger was the first garage company that offered us a free in-home estimate. The guy we spoke to Brian was very competent and seemed to understand our issue instantly just from talking about the problem. He explained how they could take care of the problem by rigging up the arm correctly and attach it to metal struts and his solution sounded good to us. He quoted us a decent price for parts and labor which would be confirmed at the time of our in-home estimate appt. The guys who came for the in-home appt checked out the door and quoted us about the same and came prepared to do the job so i gave them the green light. They took about 30-40 mins. Not only did they fix the broken arm issue and add tension to the springs, they also tightened the hinges on the panels, oiled the springs and leveled our door (it used to close slightly crooked before so there would be a small gap on one end). The main guy Rodney was polite and professional. I probably asked him to repeat stuff several times as he explained things to me and he remained patient and very pleasant the entire time. They did a great job and I got a 1 year warranty on the work they did. I could not ask for more. I'm a very satisfied customer and I recommend Stoneberger very highly.

"The project went really well and was completed in 4 weeks. CRG quickly painted and updated my entire apartment to repair plaster and woodwork and general repairs. In addition, they renovated my kitchen and were creative with solutions to increase storage in a tiny apartment. I was impressed with how considerate they were in keeping everything as clean as possible. CRG provided beautiful wood cabinets and quartz countertops that look like marble. I found the price very fair, quality amazing. CRG also guarantees their work for one year. I would definitely use CRG again as they're better than the previous three contractors whom I hired to do similar work in this and a previous condo. I'm so happy in my "new" home!"

"We had been meaning to remodel our master bathroom for awhile as the shower was very small and we had piping issues for our older house originally built in the 1970's.  Valari, the owner of Vostock Contractors, was recommended to us by my brother who had hired him to do minor contracting work around his house, including roof and ceiling repairs and minor wall fixes.  Valari came over and looked at the old bathroom and gave general ideas of what was possible for a complete remodel.  Valari is not an internal design consultant, so we ended up coming up with the bathroom concept ourselves and made all the decisions around fixures, tiles and layout ourselves.  He, however, was a good sounding board for us to bounce our ideas off of to consider different concepts.  Valari even provided recommendation for tile shops to help us in choosing our tiles, which we were very pleased with.  He also gave us clear estimates of how much material would be needed and what type of material would be needed (as we really had no clue).

Once all of our basic design decisions were made he gave what we felt was a very reasonable estimate for the job and we agreed to a timeframe to do the work in.  We purchased almost all the materials for the remodeling ourselves, but Vostock Contractors picked up all the materials ordered from the businesses.  The work for the bathroom remodel was handled almost entirely by the workmen hired by Vostock Contractors who were very considerate around making sure that they spent time to clean up every day.  The only real minor complaint I would have of this experience was when it came to trying to get the workmen to come on the weekends to finish the work within the timeframe originally agreed upon, they would promise to come, but then would show up significantly later than the agreed upon time, or not show up at all.  This only happened on weekend days and normal weekday work was done at agreed upon time.

Valari came to inspect the work on almost every day.  He also made sure that any improper work done was redone by the workmen, which did occur once with the toilet installation which was originally leaking a bit after the initial installation.  If any materials were needed for the next day's work Valari made sure that we had all the information that we needed to go and purchase the materials.

Overall, we were very satisfied with the work done on our remodeled bathroom and the professionalism of the work done by Vostock Contractors.  We have subsequently used him to do some minor electrical work (install chandelier, recess lighting and outdoor lighting) and were again quite pleased with the work done by Vostock Contractors at a reasonable price.  This follow-up work was done personally by Valari himself and without issue.  We highly recommend Vostock Contractors."

"Went wonderful with the contractor. They were great to work with and helped us navigate a very troublesome insurance company. They drove from northern Virginia to silver spring to do the work as well, not any easy task and a long commute in traffic. They were just great."

"Great general contractor who solves unexpected problems quite reasonably and quickly. The floor install required a new subfloor (expected) but unexpectedly we found that the 75% of the joists needed replacing or repairing. The work was taken care of and the floors are absolutely beautiful!!! One thing to improve is the communication between the GC / work crew / client, this is why I took one star away. If you are considering hiring EJALE, do it, you will not be disappointed with the end result! I will hire them again."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

Traditionally, bungalows are single-story homes, although having a half or partial story on top of the first floor is common. While adding a second story to a bungalow is certainly possible, the home would no longer be considered a bungalow by the strictest definition.

Bow windows need support because they are large and extend out from the exterior wall of the home. Bow windows may extend 1 foot to several feet from the outside of the home, so you’ll need to provide additional support to handle this weight. A window contractor will be able to provide the proper amount of support for your new bow window.

Framing most homes takes anywhere between five and eight weeks to complete. You’ll need to account for inclement weather conditions, material shipment times, the number of crew members, and the weight of your materials. If the weather is too hot, wet, or cold for the installation, this process could take closer to eight weeks.

You can choose 5/8-inch plywood or 3/4-inch plywood—anything thinner than these sizes may not withstand the impact of debris propelled by strong winds or can be easily torn off by intruders. Remember that the durability of the wood board is crucial, particularly for safeguarding your windows during severe storms. The effectiveness of using wood boards for protecting the investment you made in your home relies on using the appropriate material and ensuring proper installation.
