"The problem was the foyer layout. The ceiling was very high, but the ladder that they guys brought could not fit because of the way the foyer was designed. They tried several ladders and when those did not work, they went to back to the office. When the ladder they brought from the office, did not work they went to Home Depot and rented a ladder that would work for the space. They were determined to get this light up and for that I would hire them again. They were professional, clean and even though frustrating to finish the project because of the ladder situation, they made light of the situation and got the job done. Once the rented the ladder, they were able to put the light up in less than an hour. I found the cost to be high considering that it did not take them long to put up the light. However, considering their efforts to make sure the job was done, I didn't mind paying the fee and I would hire this company again."

Small jobs welcome

"I am a BIG fan of Benfield Electric.   I have used them at my prior home for more than 14 years.   In fact, they installed an outside generator at that house for us and maintained it through the years.   I only wish they serviced the area we now live in because I have such trust in their workmanship.   I highly recommend them!!!

"Used the all day deal to have a ceiling fan installed in the living room (including add power to the ceiling), several new outlets inside and outside as will as removal of old junction box and outlet from previous renovation. Mike did a great job getting everything on my To-Do list knocked off!!"

"Although they showed up almost 3 hours late you can not beat the deal. I really liked the attitude and hard work of Sean Chris and Marcus the movers. I also liked how Rachael and Angela checked in with me the day before to confirm and kept me informed of the crews lateness due to a prior job going over time. If I had to move I would hire them.

"Earl and Robert went above and beyond to ensure my satisfaction, not only making my back porch safe but attractive as well. My porch was a mess. The wood was rotted in some places, the paint was chipped and it was a real eyesore and hazard. They arrived on the day promised and got to work as expected. The communication was good and any issues that came up were addressed immediately. I never felt left out of the process and Earl even went over the color palate with me and suggested ones based on the color of my house. To my surprise, he added some design elements that made the porch even more attractive than I expected, yet didn't dent my wallet. Truly, a consummate professional, Earl and Robert made me feel at ease. I would highly recommend them again and again.

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

Many ceiling fan-rated electrical boxes tend to be made of metal. However, some electrical boxes may also be made of heavy-duty plastic that is reinforced with metal support structures. It may also have an attachment that connects directly to a ceiling joist. If you are ever ensure, consult with a licensed professional to get their insight on best practices and whether the installation is a safe one.

Hiring an electrician to install a new ceiling fan may be the best course of action. Installing a ceiling fan requires basic electrical and mechanical knowledge. It also requires holding it up with one hand and in an awkward position, making the installation even more difficult. If you’re uncomfortable with these circumstances, your best bet is to hire a professional.

If you’re removing a ceiling fan without visible screws, start by locating the fan canopy—a round cover placed above the fan blades and motor. There should be a thin ring that can be turned counterclockwise to remove the canopy and reveal the screws. After unscrewing the fan, you can disconnect the wires and remove the entire fan from the mounting hardware. For safety, make sure the fan switch is turned off before you remove the canopy. It may be easier to remove the fan blades first, too.

The square footage of your room will dictate the correct ceiling fan blade size. For example:

  • Rooms smaller than 75 square feet require a fan that is 29 to 36 inches.

  • Rooms up to 175 square feet require 42- to 48-inch fans.

  • Rooms up to 350 square feet require 52- to 56-inch fans.

  • Expansive spaces over 350 square feet need a fan larger than 60 inches.

Since the cost of installing a ceiling fan is $250 for most homeowners, it might be beneficial to replace your existing fan if you are experiencing a significant repair issue, like a broken motor. However, for less expensive repairs, like a fan blade replacement, you’ll likely spend less on the repair than a complete fan replacement. Of course, if you’re looking for an upgrade or a new style fan, replacing it altogether is always an option.
