"We are currently happy with the basement waterproofing and remodeling that was completed! There were issues - most minor but we haven't anything to compare as this was the first-time having contractors complete basement work for us; and our home is almost 100 years old. They were flexible given unexpected issues that came about with the basement. The water proofing was done first and they did a great job. They were happy to review and resolve any remaining questions/concerns and/or issues. Jorge in the service dept. is professional, punctual and is a great representative and asset for this company."

"While we have not done the project the team was helpful with getting things sorted out until we are ready to pull the trigger. Mike Walsh was particularly helpful and responsive. When we do the basement we will reach out to Dewar again to actually perform the work."

"Glorem has done fantastic job in my basement. The basement was totally unfinished of around 1000sqft. I had around 11 estimates for the job. I had a wide range of prices. They were not the cheapest but they offered the most detailed plan and price list of everything in the project. Their price was also very reasonable. Eugen and his team are extremely organized, honest and dedicated to quality work. Eugen was on top of very details in the project was present during all inspections. I really appreciate the hard work. I had a kitchenette bathroom and living area in my basement."

Small jobs welcome

"We were thoroughly impressed at the punctuality, professionalism, and overall outcome of our basement finishing project. There was nothing to begin with but cement flooring and a cinder block foundation, so Ed had to frame everything out, insulate everything, add new wiring for the electric, make minor HVAC modifications, install doors, new flooring, etc.. It was really a complete build. From day one, Ed was thoroughly professional and proficient in his ability to not only explain all of the design and material options, but overwhelmingly knowledgeable in doing what was right for our situation. Most importantly, he didn't try to oversell us on things that we didn't need. Ed and his crew went above and beyond my expectations by addressing issues that were outside the scope of what was initially discussed. When we discovered that too many kitchen appliances were on the same circuit breaker (overloading the circuit), Ed’s team moved the oven to another circuit so that the oven would work if the circuit breaker ever tripped. When we learned the existing rough-in plumbing wasn’t suitable to meet the needs of both the new bathroom and wet bar being built, he incorporated all modifications and plumbing extensions into the project without changing the original priced agreed upon !! To my amazement, when the router network connections (placed in the basement for some strange reason) to the first floor computer kept dropping because of interference, he agreed to install an Ethernet cable and Coaxial cable on the first floor so that we could move the router to the first floor, making the computer and DVD streaming device lightning fast. He even did things totally outside the project. When we had extraordinary high BGE bill one month (and a suddenly very cold house on the 2nd floor), he took the time to go up into the attic one morning and explained that the HVAC cold Air return had become detached in a specific area (causing all the cold air in the attic to funnel back through the return to the furnace), but ensured us that it was fixable, making us girls in the house feel relieved. This level of service was something that I never expected, a true gentleman! Ed not only addressed issues that we had, but explained thoroughly the best approach for fixing them, leaving me feeling as though I was an expert with all the maintenance needs of my home after the job had been done. Ed made me feel included from the start with materials selection ( lights, paint color, flooring, doors, door hardware, bathroom fixtures, and everything in between). I was very comfortable throughout the entire process because I was included in everything from beginning to end. The price for the quality of work that we received was beyond compare, truly an exceptional value! I have recommended him to all of my girlfriends because he takes such great pride in his work. If you want your basement to reflect the pride that he takes in his work, by all means, cal"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Anything having to do with the structure of your home, such as raising the ceiling, is usually the most expensive part of finishing a basement. Another project component that could be a surprisingly high expense is adding an exterior entrance.

The cost of a walkout basement can be anywhere from $5,000 to $35,000.

Whether it’s more affordable to gut a house than build a new one depends on the markets where you'd be buying and selling. However, it’s usually less expensive to renovate a home than to build new construction.

Most homeowners pay between $100,000 and $200,000 for demolition and remodeling costs, whereas the average cost to build a new home is between $139,000 and $531,300.

Any bowing in a basement wall indicates a problem that needs to be addressed by a professional. If your basement wall bows more than 1 inch, it's time for an inspection. Generally, a wall can bow up to 30% of its thickness (around 2.5 inches for an 8-inch-thick wall) before it becomes an urgent situation. Bowing of 2 to 4 inches is more straightforward to fix than bowing of more than 4 inches, which will require significant repairs. If the bowing is more than 6 inches, the wall will likely need to be replaced. The sooner you address the problem, the easier and less expensive the repair will be.

Kitchens and bathrooms are typically the most expensive rooms to renovate. The high cost is due to several factors, including expensive appliances like ranges, hoods, and refrigerators, as well as costly fixtures. The 'bones' of the room, such as electrical and plumbing, are also expensive to move or replace. Because of the vast amount of prep work, finishing, and specialized labor involved in a relatively small footprint, these projects can cost double or more than a living space remodel. Even when trying to renovate on a budget, kitchens and bathrooms will likely carry a hefty price tag.

Create a checklist, reimagine the space use, set a realistic budget, choose materials and aesthetic details, and get professional support for guidelines and troubleshooting.
