"Had basement windows installed. Great job, explained everything. The windows were the original ones. They covered the floors and the basement steps, cleaned up everything afterwards."

"Precision Remodeling did a phenomenal job rebuilding my leaky basement shower stall the result of poor installation from another contractor this spring. Jamie reassured me that his company uses quality waterproofing materials (Wedi) and employs skilled tradesman. Kirk, the plumbing technician, discovered a secondary leak in the piping and was able to correct the issue before shower installation. Steve meticulously waterproofed and tiled the shower in an intricate herringbone pattern. Grout lines are to perfection and no leaks! Jamie kept me informed of every aspect of the project. All members of the team were prompt, courteous, and clean. Precision Remodeling has earned my trust as a top-rated company. I look forward to my next full bath remodel."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Look for white mineral deposits on masonry, musty odors, or stained drywall, as these indicate ongoing water intrusion common in Baltimore. Check for missing egress windows in bedrooms or ceiling heights below seven feet, which violate safety codes. Bowing foundation walls, steep stairs, and outdated knob-and-tube wiring also signal unsafe conditions. Hire a professional to inspect unpermitted basement remodeling work and address these serious hazards.

Helpful?

Install closed-cell spray foam insulation and moisture-resistant drywall to combat high humidity levels in Baltimore. Choose luxury vinyl plank flooring over solid hardwood, and use raised subfloor panels to create a thermal break. Frame walls with pressure-treated lumber and leave a gap against the foundation for air movement. Install an interior French drain system with a battery backup sump pump to protect your basement remodeling investment from flooding.

Helpful?

Adding living space requires evaluating your current HVAC, plumbing, and electrical capacity. Many older homes in MD use steam radiators or outdated electrical panels that cannot support additional loads without upgrades. Assess your plumbing to ensure the existing drain lines can handle new bathroom fixtures. Structural modifications near shared party walls in rowhouses require careful coordination and a structural engineering review to protect both properties.

Helpful?

Narrow lot widths and shared party walls in rowhouses restrict egress window placement and complicate stair reconfiguration. Older homes often feature rubble stone foundations and low ceilings that require expensive underpinning for basement remodeling. Heavy clay soils and high water tables throughout MD create significant lateral pressure on foundation walls. Look for embedded cast iron drain lines or buried oil tanks, which require professional removal before finishing.

Helpful?

Start by securing proper permits for your basement remodeling project, as local authorities require separate approvals for electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work. Schedule moisture remediation and waterproofing before interior finishing to combat Baltimore’s high summer humidity. Check local flood maps and verify zoning rules, especially if creating a rental unit. For older homes, test for lead paint and asbestos, and hire licensed contractors for safe removal.
