He was punctual, professional and knowledgeable (with an excellent set of people skills) in regards to my plumbing issue. Small jobs welcome

"Did a great job all around. Timely work. Had father and son working together and they worked quickly. Good quality work. Most reasonable price vs. 2 other plumbers I quoted, and were willing to try to find less expensive solutions to my plumbing projects."

"We moved into a new house six months ago and recently thereafter started having problems with our sewer line backing up.  The original sewer line was installed when the house was built in 1961 and it was that terra cotta pipe which is subject to root intrusion from trees.  Initially we had the line cleared and things were working better, but knew we'd need to replace the entire sewer line at some point.  That point came in early June when the line started backing up again.  Again we had the line cleared, but this time the plumber clearing the line pulled out mud which meant the line was damaged beyond any quick fix.

We then had four different plumbers come out to estimate a replacement line.  The rub is that our exterior sewer line runs under our concrete driveway which is in good shape.  Only two of the four plumbers we saw said that they would try to replace the line without breaking up the driveway (Frank of Taciak & Sons was one).  This was incredibly important to us as that would have added an additional cost of several thousand dollars (most likely) to fix the driveway to an already expensive repair.

Frank was incredibly personable and professional when he came out for the estimate.  He went over all of our options (which were few) and answered all of the questions we put to him.  He was very thorough in describing the work that would be done and how they would do it.  Frank did let us know that breaking up the driveway might be necessary, but that they would do everything in their power not to break it up.

The plan to replace the line was to dig ditches on each side of the driveway where they could access the line and then insert new, 4" PVC piping through the old 6" terra cotta line.  Thankfully they did this expertly and did not have to break up the driveway.

They also replaced and added clean outs (two) for the line so that we were up to code.

Once completed, they filled the holes back in, reseeded the areas where the grass was destroyed and then swept the work area so dirt was not all over the place.

The total job took about 7 hours and the cost was very reasonable for this type of repair.

They were fantastic and we would recommend them!

"John E. Ruth company remodeled our basement bathroom several years ago (about $7000). They completely gutted the old bathroom and rebuilt it from scratch. The work they did was first-rate and the bathroom still looks beautiful.
After superstorm Sandy, we had them come back and install a water-powered backup sump pump as well as cleaning and lining our old sump and replacing the old electric pump. The backup has worked flawlessly on the few occasions when the power was out and it came on.
However, last week, there was a problem with the pipe leading from the main sump pump. Over time and with much use, the coupling worked itself loose. Fortunately, John E. Ruth sent out a plumber, Charlie, within an hour after I called them and he came up with a permanent fix to the problem.
The supervisor (Jim Arnold) agreed that we did not owe them anything for this repair because they had originally installed the backup pump.
Overall, we have been very pleased with the work they have performed and they stood behind their work when it counted. Also, they responded very quickly to our emergency. We would definitely use John E. Ruth plumbing again.

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

Local building codes sometimes require sewer ejector pumps to have their own vents. If so, these dedicated vents run upward through the home and exit through the roof. Otherwise, the pump’s vent pipe can connect to an existing vent stack. Regardless of which method you use, venting is an important part of installing a sewer ejector pump because it helps equalize pressure and prevents gases from building up inside your home.

The regulations around whether drain pipe installers need to hold licenses or certifications differ based on where you live and the type of drain pipe installed. Municipalities have varying rules and regulations about who can and can’t perform plumbing work. However, we recommend hiring a certified plumber to install or modify your drain lines. Licensed plumbers will perform a high-quality, professional installation, which translates to a lower risk of clogs and leaks in the future. Use Angi’s state licensing tool to confirm the license status of your potential plumber before hiring them to install your drain pipe.

A back pressure valve is a control valve used on production vessels, such as separators, treaters, and free water knockouts. The valve holds pressure until a set point is reached, and then releases upstream pressure to reset. Back pressure valves are not safety mechanisms. Instead, they are regulators designed to keep the fluid, gas, or liquid mixture in a system at a certain pressure level to prevent bursts and other incidents.

Meanwhile, a backflow preventer is a safety mechanism that kicks in when the pressure has already failed and contaminated water flows in the reverse direction. Most backflow preventers consist of two one-way valves, or check valves assembled together. This design only allows water to pass through in one direction but not the other.

The water in your toilet tank refills after each flush. So if you see dirty water in the bowl, you should check the tank to see if it’s coming from there. A dirty toilet tank can be the result of sediment in the water itself—-after all, the water will sit in the tank between flushes and can cause the interior to change into a dingy color. Faulty toilet components, like an old flapper, corroded tank lever or chain, or damaged seals, can also lead to dirty water as the materials break down inside the tank. You can clean the toilet tank or change out the old parts to give it a fresh start.

Toilet paper is the only material that you should flush down toilets. Other items like wipes, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, dental floss, and medications should be disposed of in the trash. Flushing these items can lead to plumbing issues and damage to sewage systems. Grease and cooking oils should also be avoided as they can solidify in pipes, causing blockages. Proper disposal helps prevent clogs and ensures the efficient operation of wastewater treatment systems while protecting the environment.
