"Accurate Asphalt did a great job on both of our homes. I didn't know they worked on both the Eastern and Western Shore areas of Maryland, and since we own homes both in Gambrills and Ocean Pines, I was eager to see what they could do for us on both properties. Christian and Asia were extremely professional and were able complete both projects within a couple of days. We were more than happy with the work on both properties and I hope to work with them again on sealing the driveways in 3 months or so, as their website recommends. I also wanted to mention that while completing the project at our home in Gambrills, two of the downspouts, which were very close to the driveway, were dented. Christian was very responsive and had both downspout replaced within a very short period of time. I would recommend Accurate Asphalt for their responsiveness, quality of work and their professionalism. Thanks for a job well done. Tim"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Gravel is the most economical and least expensive driveway material, costing between $1 and $3 per square foot. This is significantly cheaper than alternatives like asphalt or concrete. However, it's important to consider long-term costs, as gravel driveways require regular maintenance. You will likely need to add new gravel filling once or twice a year and regularly rake it to keep it level, which can add to the overall cost over time.

When asphalt cures, it typically changes from a very dark black hue to a lighter, more matte gray color. Cured asphalt also won’t be tacky or sticky to the touch or emit any odors from the asphalt mix. Additionally, the surface of fully cured asphalt won’t deform under any pressure.

Sometimes, when people talk about asphalt driveways, they’re actually referring to asphalt concrete, which is a completely different compound. Asphalt concrete is asphaltic cement combined with sand or grit. It is significantly more lasting and durable than regular asphalt but also much more expensive. If you’re considering using asphalt concrete, ask an asphalt company for their expert opinions.

This creates a risk for your driveway to fail after asphalt curing because it doesn't have a lasting bond with the surface. In order to get asphalt to perform as intended, it's necessary to prepare the dirt surface correctly first. The loose soil base under the new driveway must be compacted until it is stable enough to support the weight of the asphalt.

The material that’s best for your private road depends on your property, the climate in your area, and your personal preferences. Gravel is an affordable option, but some homeowners don’t like how it looks. It can be a pain to remove snow from, and it requires more ongoing maintenance than asphalt or concrete. However, while these other options require less maintenance and make snow removal a breeze, they’re more expensive and will need repairs from time to time. Ultimately, you’ll have to choose the road material that suits you and your property best.
