"They did a great job, and they did it quickly. So many contractors take way too long. But they got right to it. Very happy with my new driveway. Drainage was a main concern; water runs right down the middle of the driveway."

"We requested to have the cracks in our driveway filled as well as the entire thing seal coated and he did exactly that! He was on time, worked diligently to ensure it was done in a timely manner, and was extremely pleasant and polite. He left our driveway looking brand new and completed the work for a very reasonable price. Highly recommend him for all of your blacktop needs!"

"Work went very well! East Coast showed up when scheduled on time. Work was done the same day. Job was very well done and I am very happy with the completed job. Owner was onsite to oversee and help with job and all questions were answered. Price was very fair. Would definitely hire again and would also recommend company!"

"Robert was the first to respond when I looked for quotes on repairing a washed out section of my driveway. He also gave me the best quote and was back within a week to do the job. He was courteous, prompt, and professional, and worked non-stop to do what I wanted. The job was completed within a few hours of his arrival and it looks wonderful! I will have him back again when I can resurface the driveway!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The decision to repair or replace your driveway depends on the extent of the damage. If your driveway has a few small cracks, a simple repair will do the trick. If you see larger cracks and potholes, it may be time to consider resurfacing or replacement. Resurfacing is a great option if more than 25% of the surface is damaged, but if the damage is extensive—deep cracks or significant sinking—it’s best to replace the driveway entirely. A new driveway, with proper care, can last decades while patching or resurfacing might only hold up for a few years before needing more attention.

Like all driveway materials, asphalt can crack in the wrong conditions and with age. Many things can cause asphalt to crack, including shifting soil or settling under the foundation. Other common causes are driving oversized vehicles on the asphalt, tree roots, and using rock salt during the snowy season. Proper installation and sealing the driveway every 10 years can help prevent cracks.

The driveway apron is a technical term referring to where a private driveway meets the public street. If there is a sidewalk in front of the house, the driveway apron is typically on the opposite side of the public sidewalk from the driveway itself.

Many asphalt companies have experience with tar and chip paving, but not all. The process is unique enough—and not incredibly common enough—that you may have to look around for a tar and chip specialist. However, speaking with a driveway company is a great place to start, especially if they have experience with multiple materials.

If your driveway is cracked, you can repave it with a process called asphalt overlay. Overlay is more cost-effective than a full replacement but is better suited for minor cracks and issues. If you have major cracks or other problems like water pooling, asphalt overlay isn’t your best bet. Plus, paving over a cracked driveway only extends the lifetime by about 10 years, whereas replacing it would start the clock over completely to give you up to 30 years.
