"Owner came out promptly when we called for a sewer line backing up into our basement. His quote was better than another we received an hour before, and he had the equipment ready to go immediately. He cleared the blockage and advised us to pursue a video inspection because of a snag in the line (possible rupture in the pipe and/or tree root) that likely contributed to the backup."

"Received fast up-front price from BFMD for our sewer line dig up and replace, and repair of basement cleanout. BFMD moved quickly to repair the cleanout and provided free line cleanings as we waited for the dig up. Scheduling of the dig up and replace was repeatedly delayed - nearly three weeks beyond the initial estimated start date - which was very frustrating as we were having sewer backups in our home. Can’t speak more highly of the plumbers on staff - Nick in particular. They were knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly cared about their work and satisfaction of the clients. Management should work to improve scheduling process and establish clear internal policies to provide clients assurance of timeliness of work."

Sewer Cleaning questions, answered by experts

With a one-way cleanout, you can access your sewer line from one direction. Depending on the way it curves, a plumber can either access the side of the pipe that goes into your home or the side that goes to your yard. On the other hand, two-way cleanouts allow pros to access both sides of the sewer line, thanks to their dual-pipe design (they’re usually U-shaped).

Sometimes, the drain is just too clogged—thanks, stubborn hair and soap scum. In this case, you’ll need a more powerful drain cleaner than you can DIY safely at home. But this doesn’t mean you have to choose a traditional drain cleaner.

You can find biodegradable drain cleaners at your local home improvement store or online for those drains that need a little more oomph

While on the hunt for a formidable drain cleaner, the best options are non-chemical clog solutions that combine enzymes and bacteria.

When hiring a sewer line company, you need to consider more than just the quoted price. Make sure to check that the company or contractor is licensed, certified, and insured to protect you both. Check for positive reviews, and you can even request references for extra peace of mind.

To find the best contractor, you might also want to consider how long the company has been in business doing sewer line cleaning and if they’ve won any industry awards for their work and service. Review potential contracts closely, and look for transparent pricing.

No, you typically cannot use metal detectors to find your sewer line. Most sewer lines are made of non-metallic materials such as PVC, clay, or cast iron, which are not detectable by standard metal detectors. Metal detectors are designed to locate metallic objects, so they won't be effective for identifying the path of a non-metallic sewer line. To locate your sewer line accurately, it's best to use other methods.

DIY is not recommended due to safety risks and specialized equipment requirements. Hire professionals for effective clearing.
