"Daryl and his crew did a fantastic job of bringing our basement vision to life. We went from a completely unfinished basement, to a lounge/bar game room! We absolutely love it. Would highly recommend Daryl and everyone else at Brackettry!"

"We are currently happy with the basement waterproofing and remodeling that was completed! There were issues - most minor but we haven't anything to compare as this was the first-time having contractors complete basement work for us; and our home is almost 100 years old. They were flexible given unexpected issues that came about with the basement. The water proofing was done first and they did a great job. They were happy to review and resolve any remaining questions/concerns and/or issues. Jorge in the service dept. is professional, punctual and is a great representative and asset for this company."

"I called JES Foundation Company for a free inspection of my crawl space. I was concerned about a crack in my foundation wall. JES inspector Richard Sheman Showed up to inspect my foundation. He sent a text with the time of his arrival. He was pleasant and on time. He went into my crawlspace and inspected the crack in the wall and stated I had nothing to worry about. He was very knowledgeable about the foundation and itâ  s structure. He explain to me how I could fix the superficial settling crack and save a bunch of money. I appreciate the honesty of the business and I would recommend it to anyone who had the same concerns, and for any of their other services. Ron P Home owner."

"Our foundation was seriously compromised due to water intrusion. Steve responded quickly and gave us an estimate at a great price. He was knowledgeable and informative. Dan and his team repaired our foundation, installed a drainage system and pump, as well as a vapor barrier. Our basement has been dry and free of mold since. The project was completed in a matter of days. I couldn’t believe how quickly they worked. I recommend the gurus to everyone who needs basement repairs. Thank you again!!!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Building a seasonal routine for masonry work protects your Elkton home from serious structural damage. Inspect your exterior after the last spring freeze to catch cracked joints and spalling brick. Following heavy spring rains, look for white salt deposits or basement moisture. Finally, conduct a pre-winter inspection in late fall to seal open cracks before freezing temperatures return. Address these issues early to prevent winter weather from worsening the damage.

Helpful?

Older construction methods complicate masonry work. Many historic Elkton properties feature unreinforced walls and soft regional brick that demand specialized engineering and historic preservation approvals. Proximity to local waterways triggers strict environmental regulations for exterior alterations. Additionally, clay-heavy soils cause constant foundation shifting, and high water tables create intense pressure against older basement walls. Consult a local professional to navigate these unique structural and environmental challenges safely.

Helpful?

Minor issues with masonry work escalate rapidly during severe MD freeze-thaw cycles. Hairline cracks and receding mortar joints allow water to penetrate and expand, causing severe brick spalling. White salt deposits on your foundation indicate active moisture intrusion from surrounding clay soils. Stair-step cracking signals structural foundation settlement, while a damaged chimney crown funnels water directly into your roof. Repair these early warning signs immediately to prevent structural failure.

Helpful?

Always hire licensed contractors who handle the local permit process directly for your masonry work. In Elkton, professionals must understand regional materials, including the specific mortar mixes required for historic brick. Your contractor must also navigate Chesapeake Bay watershed restrictions and demonstrate clear protocols for cold-weather curing. Verify their credentials and ask how they protect fresh mortar during our unpredictable seasonal temperature drops.

Helpful?

The timeline for masonry work depends heavily on the season. In MD, harsh winters and humid summers compress projects into busy spring and fall windows. Frequent freeze-thaw cycles demand temperature holds for proper mortar curing. Additionally, local permit reviews and the careful historic material matching required for older homes extend completion times. Schedule your project well in advance to account for these weather and structural delays.
