"We had a really good experience with Roofing Pups. Their rep Alex was great to work with, and the roofing crew that came to our house did a good job and cleaned up afterward. We opted to get our gutters replaced as well as our roof, which required a second day of work. The Roofing Pups employee in charge of this job (also named Alex) noticed that the color of the new gutters didnt match our house, and made a point of checking it with us before getting started. We really appreciated this as the new gutters would have clashed with the color of our siding! Everyone with the company was great about making the change, ordering new parts and rescheduling the job. We were very impressed with their service and professionalism. We would definitely use Roofing Pups again!"

"We hired Cox to repair/replace the both sides of the church's pitch roof at Our Lady of Hope Church in Dundalk. They took off the old roof, added plywood, new cloth and shingles. We are talking about a roof that is 1000's of square feet! The job was done within the allotted time. The clean-up was superb! The price was 17% below the closest bid price. A most excellent result from a fantastic company."

"From the 1st meeting with the 1st PHR's representative, I was sold. I was so impressed with everyone's kindness and professionalism, making me feel very secure. Our coordinator showed us a few videos of the process. Every question we had, he answered without hesitation and he provided samples as proof. We signed that day and within one week, we had a beautiful new roof with an even more wonderful guarantee. The crew arrived on time, they were all courteous, kind and clean. The entire project took one day. I was contacted by several people during the course of the day and after, in person and by phone, to make sure everything was going well, then after the crew manager walked me around the house to make sure I was happy. The perimeter of my house looked as though the guys vacuumed my lawn it was so clean, better than before they start. We are both so happy with our new roof and our entire experience, we will definitely use PHR for our next project... siding."

"Tim Whiting, and his company, are nothing short of amazing. After a few weeks of heavy rain, my roof began leaking. Tim was the only one who could get to my house in less than a week. His crew came out, diagnosed the problem (2 separate areas were leaking), replaced boards and shingles, and completely remediated the issue. I could NOT be happier with the service, and they will be my first call with any future roofing issues. Thank you Tim!!!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Underlayment is required by building code, so any roof installed without it is technically against code. The underlayment acts as the second layer of defense against water, so installing a roof without underlayment means a much higher risk of roof leaks. You’ll have the best chance of avoiding roof leaks if you install drip edge flashing covered by underlayment, and then install your roofing material over that.

Here are a few tips on how to choose a roofer:

  • Get everything in writing

  • Ask for insurance, license, and bond, then verify them

  • Check their reviews

  • Ask for recommendations

  • Get multiple quotes

You’ll also want to watch out for any red flags like:

  • Pushy sales tactics

  • Not willing to show necessary documentation

  • Bad gut instincts

You’re going to need a permit for nearly every roof-raising project. This is a very important step, as the work you’re doing has serious safety considerations. Professionals are the ones to handle this type of work—including sourcing the permits—as they have the expertise required to perform the work safely. Insurance and warranty are usually voided if you do this work without a permit, and you may even be required to halt construction and tear it down as a penalty for working without a building permit.

While you can stay at home during a roof replacement, you probably won’t want to, as it’ll be very noisy. The area around your home will also be messy, as roofers will be discarding old roof material and storing their equipment on the ground.

The placement of snow guards depends on the individual roof, but typically snow guards are placed between 12 and 18 inches from the eaves, though they can be placed as close as six inches and as far as 24 inches from the eaves. A roofing professional can assess the roof and potential snow loads to determine the best placement.
