This ended up being a big problem, with flooding and gunk backing up into the house [the problem would ultimately be diagnosed as tree roots growing into our sewer line]. Thomas E. Clark first sent out a plumber to do an initial check, and once he determined that we needed to send a scope and snake into our sewer line, he called a drain technician to come out. The drain technician who came out was incredibly nice and professional, but completely misdiagnosed the problem the house was having. No need to get into the weeds of his diagnosis, but after scoping the sewer line, he made what turned out to be a pretty basic error in identifying where the clog was. Sure, people make mistakes, but based on the faulty advice we got, we had to have technicians from the city come out that night (on an emergency call ), only to tell us of the error made by the plumber and that in order to have the problem fixed, we'd have to have the plumbers come right back out to diagnose it properly. I then called Thomas E. Clark to come back and take another look at the sewer line, to catch the problem that they missed the first time, and ultimately give me an estimate as to what it would cost to fix the problem. (Mind you, this will now have been a third visit from Thomas E. Clark, and by this point we had paid them about $700 -- and still had not gotten an estimate to fix the actual problem.) Here's where we had the biggest problem - the third guy to come out (Joe, who I believe is one of their managers) suggested that there was a chance that he was going to bill us again for the company's services if they were to take off our toilet and scope the sewer line again. By even making that suggestion, he failed at a basic principle of providing services - when one of your subordinates screws something up and you have to send someone more senior in to clean up the mess, you do not hold the client responsible. I then had what can only be described as a ridiculous conversation (for about ten minutes) with Joe where we haggled over whether I would have to pay another $600 or so for him to look into the sewer line again. They ended up not charging me for the visit, but that we even had to have that conversation was absurd. Then, two more problems. One, for what ended up being about a $10,000 job, his estimate was just scrawled as about two sentences at the bottom of an invoice - no substantive details about the work they'd do, or of the actual cost breakdown. For such a big project, it was perfunctory at best. And he was also incorrect about the permits we'd need - he suggested that we might need a $3,000 permit, which would be our responsibility -- this turned out to be inaccurate. The plumbers we ended up going with explained the permitting issues much better, and handled them all for us. The folks at Thomas E. Clark were all reasonably nice people and I'm sure they're wonderful plumbers, but after this experience, they came off as careless and a bit sloppy. While the other plumber didn't say anything, Paul insisted on replacing the shut-off valves to the kitchen faucet, something that the other plumber did not mention. I grumbled but he had installed a new water heater and I was very happy with the work, timing and price. The shutoffs were inoperative and when he tried to use them, they leaked badly. If he hadn't insisted, this broken faucet would have been a disaster because all plumbers were prioritizing hurricane damage - houses with feet of water in the basement, sewer systems overflowing into houses versus every thing else. The only disconcerting thing is that you usually get an answering machine when you call the main number. But they check frequently and prioritize based on the problem and call and/or email back. I have used him several times. He shows up and does the work when he says he will and cleans up well afterward. His prices are reasonable. They kept me informed of each step of work they did along the way. There were some things that happened during the excavation that they could not avoid, and they were pretty conscientious. Once they got down to the sewer line they kept us with sewer and water every night, which sometimes does not happen. They were conscientious with small kids. When they did the repair they pulled out the permits and all the licenses that were required and worked with the DC government really very well. They made sure that the repair that they did was done with the right speck as there was a good grade going through. You need a certain degree of drop from the house to main sewer so that it worked properly. They even repaired a piece that was underneath the pipe that was also in the wrong angle. They went above and beyond in finding and correcting everything with no extra cost. They supported the line appropriately. They back filled so that when it collapse there is no problem. They refilled the whole empty lines well. There were big pieces of rock and concrete that involves the filling. They put them on the side for disposal. They were excellent. Then he found access to the sewer line through our utility closet, which required very little prep/clean-up. I asked about a discount for the easier job and was told that the price was firm. The job was done correctly and quickly in less than 1.5 hours total (two men). Upon getting a second opinion and a rescope of the line it was determined that the running trap at my property line needed cleaning which ultimately solved the problem. No separation found. "People don’t plan to have their water pipe burst. Seeing as it was -10 degrees today it’s no surprise ours did, despite every effort to make sure the water in the pipes were moving. I was at a doctors appt and walked in to water bursting out of the kitchen ceiling in buckets! My mother was looking where to turn off the main water with no success. When I got to it, water had been fishing for over 30 minutes! Oh, did I mention this occurred around noon today, which happens to be a Friday? My insurance said to see if I could get a plumber here today to expose the burst, take a pic to prove it’s due to a frozen pipe, then fix it. Of course I went straight to Angie’s List and saw this company was the highest rated near me and had great reviews. I called and spoke to the owner, Robert, and explained our situation. He was excellent! Knowing mine wasn’t the only pipe that burst, during this weather, I had no idea what their availability was. In spite of many similar issues, he made sure his guys could come over this afternoon. He was concerned about me having to wait for a water mitigation crew to come out and said he could take care of that too. Unfortunately, we’d already booked one with our insurance, who are coming out tomorrow. The guys came and they were WONDERFUL!!!! They went right to work, cutting open the drywall surrounding the bursted pipe. Took pictures for me so I could send it to my insurance company and fixed it in no time. They were perfect gentlemen. It didn’t take long to see how kind, down to earth, professional and mindful of my concerns. Ya know how uncomfortable it can be not knowing who is coming in your home. I felt so comfortable with them. Wound up joking around with them as though I’d known them for years. The two guys who came were Ivan Perez and E’Nedino Diaz. Not only did they fix the reason for which they came, they even fixed a few issues we had in our upstairs bathroom. They did so professionally and efficiently. I would have no hesitation recommending them to others. To me they were angels with their wings and halo’s hidden. ?"

FAQs for sewer cleaning projects in College Park, MD
In most states, companies that perform sewer cleaning services don’t need specific licensing, but you should always ensure you hire a licensed and certified plumber to get the work done. You can use our state licensing tool to check whether the potential sewer cleaning company holds a plumber’s certification and license. Hiring a certified sewer cleaning services guarantees that the work will be done safely, there won’t be additional damage done to your home, and the problem will be fixed.
The average cost to snake your main sewer line is around $250 for a simple snake. Most sewer line specialists charge between $45 and $200 per hour for main sewer line snaking, so the time involved plays a major role. The price you’ll pay will depend on the severity of the clog, the item causing the backup, how long it takes to remove the item, and more. A more severe issue that requires unclogging a main sewer line will cost $3,100 on average.
Drains in your home gurgle during or after draining
Water backs up into your sewer line cleanout
You notice foul odors in your home
The best way to confirm that your main sewer line is clogged is to hire a professional plumber to assess the situation and use a camera to inspect the inside.
In most cases, drain cleaners will not clear a clogged sewer line, and they’re likely to damage your plumbing. Sewer lines are several inches wide, meaning any material that clogs it will need to be large. Drain cleaner can work on small clogs, but it usually won’t clear a larger one in a sewer main. Drain cleaners can also easily damage and corrode your plumbing with prolonged contact, and a clog will keep the cleaner in contact with the pipes for an extended period. Hire a professional sewer cleaner instead for a safe fix.
You should not attempt to snake your sewer yourself. Accessing and snaking your sewer requires heavy-duty equipment, and while renting is possible, misusing it can damage your sewer main and leave you with very expensive repair costs, not to mention potential environmental issues and severe water damage. Accessing your sewer also exposes you to hazardous sewer gasses, and failing to seal the sewer properly after work can be very dangerous. It’s always best to hire a professional sewer cleaner near you to handle this type of work.
