I called this company because we had a steam radiator pipe that leaking steam (not leaking seriously, we have left it for years and only just decided to repair it) and some of the control valves and steam vents of our 7 steam radiators are rusted, and we would like to change to new valves and vents. The technician came on 5th December and he found out that the leaking was caused by one loose lockout, hence, he put pipe tape on, retightened it, turn the boiler on, and clean the area, job done. He then came downstairs and told me that all valves and steam vents need changing, then went to his car and called his company to get prices for parts to give me an estimate. The technician came in with an estimate and a bill of $220. I signed and paid the invoice without checking details. Later on, I was thinking this was a very expensive bill for a technician to simply fasten one loose lockout, so I checked the bill and found out the technician charged me full hour’s fee from 11:30 – 12:30, to put pipe tape on, fasten the lockout, turn the boiler on and clean the area. According to my recollection, the actual work did not take more than 10 minutes and he was in the house inspecting other 6 radiators. In total, he spent less than 30 minutes in the house before he went to his car. So I called the company on 6th December and made a compliant about the issue. Richard, who was dealing with me, asked me if I have any prove of when the technician arrived and when he left, I told him that I didn’t have any prove, and admitted that I signed the invoice without checking, but I told him that according to my recollections, it was clear that the technician took less than 30 minutes to do the job. Richard agreed to talk to the technician and get back to me later. When Richard called me back, he said he believed that the technician charged me fairly, and he insisted that the charge was FAIR even after I told him that I found proves to show the technician only spent less than 30 minutes to do the job and inspecting works need to be done for an estimate, and the rest of the time he spent was sitting in his car calling his company and writing up an estimate and invoice. (I always text my husband as soon as a workman shows up as a safety precaution, so when the technician arrived, I immediately texted my husband and told him the technician arrived at 11:53 am. At 12:17, I texted my husband again told him what the technician said about what to be done and told him that I am just waiting for his estimate – the technician was already went to his car to write an estimate by then. ) Richard confirmed that we paid $75 for their technician to come out and give us a free estimate, so the time spent from inspecting works to be done to write an estimate is FREE. But their technician, did not only charge $75 service fees, but also charged the time before he even arrived at our house (his invoice indicated that his work started at 11:30, but my text message shows he arrived around 11:53), tightening a loose lockout, inspecting works to be done, calling his company for parts price and writing up a 3 lines estimate and an invoice. Oh by the way, the technician charged an hour’s fee to tightening a loose lockout, will soon be replaced. They gave me $25 discount, but……
