"We hired Bob Phalan to replace the surrounding trim after we had installed new garage doors. He estimated 1½ days. But upon removal of the exist aluminum siding, structural damage including carpenter ant damage and a rusted-cracked lally column were discovered. Bob made required repairs replacing 2x4s, the lally column, plywood, insulation, wall board, and plastering. Then he was able to begin work on the vinyl trim. We showed Bob a photo of the “look” we wanted to achieve and he achieved it perfectly. He was at our home for 3 very long days, the cost of his work was very reasonable."

"Had to call them back for an area that had been missed, but they fixed it quickly. I did have them give me an estimate to remove a barn I had which I thought was far too high."

"I hired Hess and Son to do some interior framing, insulation, and ceiling work on my new woodworking barn. These guys did an outstanding job. I have owned four houses in three states and have used many contractors. These guys are in the top 1%. Blaine and his team were prompt, professional, polite, and did wonderful work. They explained each step of the process so that I was always “in the loop,” made some good suggestions that saved me money, and even through in some “extras” for free that made the finished job nicer. The also coordinated everything with my electrician and garage door installer so that everyone was “singing from the same sheet of music,” which is vital when multiple trades are involved in a project. Long story short is that I highly recommend Hess and Son and am planning to use them for another project in the spring."

"When I called to hire the handyman, the person on the phone warned me that sometimes exterior rot is like peeling an onion. What an onion! The visible rot was on the weather side of the house on a clapboard chimney. After a little excavation, it soon became clear that this was a much bigger project. Water has been leaking into that chimney for some time and the rot on its base was incredible. Four of five joists holding up the fire box and the entire chimney were rotted to within a few inches of the foundation. Worse, it appears that the previous owners dressed up the problem before selling us the house five years ago. The crew from Mr. Handyman Central MetroWest was terrific. They removed the rotted wood and essentially rebuilt the chimney's base, tying it into the existing, solid joists; cut out the other jerry-rigged fix the previous owners had attempted, and rebuilt the frame of the chimney; and then resided the chimney. That sounds simple, but it was a major job--definitely well beyond what I was capable of and worth every nickle we spent on it. The guys working on the project were professional in every sense of the word. They were dutiful--there wasn't really anytime I didn't hear them hammering, sawing, drilling, etc. They were on time. They were polite. They cleaned up every day of a three-day project. And they did the little things that make the difference between getting the job done and really solving the problem for us. They even built a shelf for a dehumidifier under an adjacent crawl space, solving another problem for us before it really became a big one. To top it all off, they replaced a couple of other rotten pieces of trim. Last summer, I brought out a couple of contractors to look at the rot and they all said the work was too small for them. I wonder if they would have agreed if they knew what the project became. And in honesty, the reality of paying by the hour for a project like this is not something I would have planned to do. But once the extent of the problem was there for me to see, we had to solve it--getting three quotes from other providers wasn't really an option. The bottom line is this: I am extremely happy with the work Mr. Handyman of Central Metro West did. The cost was more than I had planned on going in--but that was the function of the size of the problem and what it would take to fix it."

"We hired Bertie Walsh to re-do our garage ceiling which had been incorrectly repaired by a different contractor (not a contractor found on Angie's List).  Bertie was a godsend because after he removed the ceiling he pointed out to us that the previous contractor had failed to connect the blue board to the joist (not sure if that's the right word) and there also wasn't any strapping holding it to the subsurface, which would have caused it to eventually bow out.  Bertie put a new section of ceiling up and finished it with plaster and did a remarkable job matching the existing ceiling.

Bertie is quiet and hard working.  No fluff with this guy.  He's an honest, no-nonsense guy who will give you a very reasonable quote, will show up when he says he will, and then quietly and diligently do the work.  He cleaned up well after the work was completed.  I found myself looking for other things that needed plastering or handiwork around the house just so we could hire him again.  Yep, he is that good!

"Patrick and team worked on an interior painting project to paint doors, trims, walls and ceiling. They did an awesome job. Patrick was very detail oriented and ensured all steps are followed in the process to get the best out come with clean looking finish. They were very independent and moved the stuff around where needed and kept the work going. Very happy with their work and would hire again or refer to friends and family."

Customers say: True professional

"Needed to have a panel replaced on an interior door on an antique colonial house. Could not find anyone I was comfortable with to do the job. A friend of mine suggested calling Claudius to do the job. He came out, gave me an estimate, took the door and a week later came back and installed the door. I couldnâ t believe the job he did on that door. He is a true craftsman. It looked like a new door had been installed. He has been here ever since working on a 230-year-old barn and bringing it back to life. He is a pleasure to work with, if he says he is coming he shows up, and if he canâ t come, he calls and lets you know. He gives you an honest day's work every day for money you pay him. Pole Barn Builders questions, answered by experts

Tiny houses, often called tiny homes, need between 100 to 400 square feet, with the most common size being between 200 and 300 square feet. Tiny houses more than 400 square feet venture into apartment-size dwellings and may be considered more of a traditional house than a tiny home. The number of occupants, desired lifestyle, and furniture will all be major factors that determine the desired tiny house size.

Yes, you can use a storage shed several ways, including as a chicken coop, but you'll need to make some modifications. You will have to add a chicken door, roosts, ventilation near the roof, mesh on the windows, and insulation if you live in a colder climate. Additionally, you’ll want to ensure that the shed is predator-proof so no other animals can harm your chickens. You should also add a run and nest boxes to your shed.

Average barndominiums last between 50 and 150 years depending on the materials they are made from, how well they are maintained, and the environment they are built in. Barndominiums are very durable and have a much longer lifespan than traditional wood homes. With proper care and maintenance, well-built barndominium homes can last generations.

Prefab sheds can be worth it, depending on your needs and goals. If you want to build the shed yourself or have a quick project turnaround, then a prefab shed will likely be worth it. If you want something more customized, then starting from scratch may help you achieve your goals better than a prefab could.

If you’re building a pole barn in place of a traditional home, lenders usually don’t offer traditional mortgages for these structures. You can also expect higher insulation costs and building permits may not be allowed in your area. Even if you’re just using a pole barn as storage or as a shelter for animals, these structures are less durable than steel buildings and require more maintenance.
