"We hired Asphalt Engineering to install a driveway this past summer to replace our gravel and deteriorated bituminous concrete driveway with new bit conc. We sought proposals from two contractors. Although their prices were within a few hundred dollars of each other’s, Asphalt Engineering’s proposal was far superior. It was a multi-page document that included photos, sketches, details, dimensions, and a cost estimate. The other contractor submitted a two-paragraph proposal. Asphalt Engineering arrived as scheduled to remove the existing driveway, grade, and install a gravel base sloped for proper drainage. A week later they returned, as scheduled, to install the binder and finish coats. Their work was excellent. The driveway now drains as it should. I highly recommend Asphalt Engineering. If I had another driveway, I’d hire them again. You should too!"

"David and crew did an excellent job replacing our front walk with pavers and our driveway with asphalt, and Michelle did an excellent job with the customer service. Their price was very competitive with two other quotes that I got and I highly recommend them!"

Customers say: True professional

"Our 16 year old brick paver walkway was falling apart and overrun by weeds and moss. Old technology was used for construction. The bottom step of our brick front landing had also separated from the upper two steps. We consulted Rich for an evaluation. He advised ripping out the bottom step of the landing and bringing the walkway around in a slightly tighter path. He met us down at Landscape Depot Supply in Shrewsbury to chose the pavers. We found everyone to be very helpful there. Rich's team made quick work of dismantling the old walkway and was able to re-use the granite steps. They placed underground PVC pipe to help with drainage issues from the downspouts. He used a polymeric sand to set the pavers which means my days of pulling weeds out between the bricks are over! He came back three weeks later to install the landscaping, removing a failed prior landscape design first. Laid down some sod and applied bark mulch. Everything looks beautiful. He has a keen eye for design and is able to translate that into his work. He has a pleasant personality and is very approachable. His team is respectful of personal property and picks up after themselves."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

In Worcester, several factors can complicate an asphalt paving project. The deep frost line requires significant excavation to prevent frost heave, and the area's hilly terrain and rocky New England soil present drainage and excavation challenges. Additionally, steep driveways common in local neighborhoods, narrow lot access in historic areas, and the need to work around shallow utility lines all add complexity to the work.

Helpful?

In Worcester, extensive "alligator" cracking covering over 30% of the surface, significant frost heave, or soft spots indicating base failure signal the need for a full asphalt paving replacement. Smaller issues like isolated cracks, minor potholes, or surface scaling from road salt can often be addressed with repairs like crack sealing or patching, which is a more economical solution for localized damage.

Helpful?

For Worcester homeowners, small cracks under ¼ inch can be cleaned and filled with a quality asphalt crack filler during dry, mild weather. Regularly sweeping your driveway, keeping gutters clear, and applying sealcoating every few years will help prevent larger issues. Avoid DIY repairs during cold or wet conditions. If you spot uneven surfaces, drainage problems, or cracks widening, it’s best to consult a local asphalt repair specialist.

Helpful?

In Worcester, you’ll find residential driveway contractors who focus on homes, commercial asphalt paving experts for parking lots and business properties, and municipal specialists handling public roads and infrastructure. Some local companies offer full-service site prep and paving, while others concentrate on services like sealcoating, driveway resurfacing, or asphalt repair. Choosing the right contractor depends on your project’s size, location, and specific paving needs.

Helpful?

In Worcester, immediate attention is needed if you notice deep potholes, large cracks, pooling water, or areas where the asphalt is crumbling—these issues can worsen quickly with MA’s changing weather. Minor surface cracks or faded sealcoating can often wait, but should be monitored. Schedule non-urgent driveway resurfacing or sealcoating for late spring through early fall, and reassess after winter for any new or worsening damage.
