"We hired NE Foundation Crack Repair to fix a cracked foundation wall in our Basement. From our first communication to the estimate to the completion of the job this company was professional and very easy to deal with. Our technician Chase arrived when we expected, did a beautiful, clean, and complete repair of our garage wall inside and out. He was very skilled and knowledgeable and we were very happy with how friendly and professional he was. We highly recommend this company and would absolutely call them again if needed."

"I would absolutely recommend Steven for plaster/drywall/paint projects. He removed tough Venetian plaster and prepared the walls for paint. The walls ended up being perfectly smooth. He was meticulous in his preparation and explained exactly what he was doing along the way. His was quite reasonable and he was very easy to work with. Highly recommended."

"They created a utility room on the main floor so that I can move my washer and dryer from the basement up to a main floor. It’s perfect. They installed a new shower in my main floor bathroom. They painted my house exterior and what an excellent job they did. They did multiple jobs around the inside and exterior of my home. My patio railings that they installed on portions of my roof look absolutely beautiful. These guys are so good at their work and very talented with creativity when you’re trying to think of how to improve things. I highly recommend them."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Generally speaking, a retaining wall should be between 3 and 4 feet high, depending on variables such as the wall-building material, the purpose of the retaining wall, and more. If you want your retaining wall to be taller than 4 feet, check with your local building ordinance office for the maximum allotment. You may also need a special permit for retaining walls over 4 feet tall.

The lifespan of a retaining wall varies based on its material, installation quality, maintenance, and local climate, with an average range of 20 to 100 years. Retaining walls made from durable materials like concrete, stone, and brick generally last a minimum of 50 years. Concrete walls typically last between 50 and 100 years, while brick can last for over a century in ideal conditions. Timber retaining walls can last from 20 to 40 years, depending on the wood quality, and pressure-treated wood walls average around 30 years. It is important to note that a retaining wall can fail prematurely if it was poorly constructed, for example, with inefficient footings or without necessary rebar reinforcements.

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

Small retaining walls still require a foundation of some kind, typically a concrete footing. This helps to ensure the wall is structurally sound and prevents the ground from shifting over time, especially during those winter freeze/thaw cycles. The footing helps spread the weight of the wall and the load it carries over a larger area of the ground, thus assisting with stability. This is true of small retaining walls, larger rock garden walls, and the like.
