"Our three-story Victorian needed exterior painting and repair work (siding, trim, porch), and as with many Victorians, had a lot of detail work. The team from North Shore did a fantastic job - they were thorough, fast for such a large project, and respectful of our property. The team's attention to detail was extraordinary - before the last day of work, we did a walk around to make note of the handful of items that we saw that we wanted to make sure got done. Without us even needing to mention those to the team, they addressed every single one as part of their final touch up process. This level of attention to detail is not something we have had from all contractors we have worked with. We would absolutely use North Shore again for future projects. Pricing was fair, but not cheap - that said, you get what you pay for and the quality speaks for itself."

"Pontes Painting did an amazing job doing interior and exterior painting at our home. They were professional, knowledgeable, attentive to detail and even did additional small tasks not on the estimate. We are very pleased and highly recommend this company."

Customers say: Super punctual

"Steve and his crew did a FANTASTIC job doing a full interior painting of our house. There were areas with writing on the walls, drywall damage, peeling paint and seams. They fixed all of it, advised us on which color options and sheens would look best, and completely transformed the feel of the house. They used very high quality paint. He was very communicative and prices were very fair. Highly recommend Bay State!"

"Mateus & Co were amazing. We did interior work with lots of different colors and finishes. Mateus offered great advice about our job, and was available every time when I reached out (way too much) before deciding on the colors etc. He stays in touch about the job real-time...He and the other painters arrived early and stayed late to get the job done. The quality is amazing--the lines are precise throughout (and there are lots of them). I cannot recommend them highly enough. I spoke with a realtor early on, looking for recommendations, and he commented that Mateus' prices were good (I had no idea), and I see now that is the case given the extent and precision of the job. I would use him and his team again in a heartbeat. (Also, at the time, the bridge coming into the building I live in was under repair so Mateus had to walk a distance with all the materials even to get to our unit--no problem...just such a personable great person.)"

Interior Painting questions, answered by experts

You can sand paint off a wall. However, it's difficult and time-consuming. Depending on why you wish to remove the paint, there are simpler ways to achieve similar results. Scraping off any loose paint and applying a skim coat is the most common way to hide a damaged wall or paint job.

The safest way to remove lead-based paint is by letting a professional take over. For most people, lead paint removal costs an average of $3,400. You should never attempt to dry sand old lead-based paint surfaces by hand. Most professionals use a paint stripper to do the job followed by wet scraping, but if you don’t want to remove lead paint, another option is to paint over it. Only consider this option if the old lead paint finish isn’t flaking or cracked.

You do not have to remove lead paint if the surface is not chipping or peeling or if there are no pregnant people or children under the age of six who live in or regularly visit your home. Lead paint is a particular risk for young children whose brains and bodies are not fully developed. Experts strongly recommend that you call a pro to remove lead paint if it’s peeling or flaking, no matter who lives in the home. You can experience lead poisoning by breathing in or ingesting just a small amount of it.

You can apply waterproofing over paint, but you won't get as much protection as you would if you painted the surface with a waterproof paint from the get-go. Not all waterproofing methods are compatible with painted surfaces, and they may not adhere well. This is especially true if the paint is glossy, old, or flaking. Waterproofing sealers are primarily meant to be applied to porous surfaces, like concrete, wood, or brick.

Paint removal is a time-consuming job that can take anywhere from an hour for small surfaces, like a single stair banister, to multiple days for larger projects, like removing paint from wood siding. Expect to spend between five and 20 minutes per square foot. You can use chemical paint strippers to speed up the process, but be sure you use proper protective gear and take care to pick a product that’s suited for your material.
