"From the first meeting. Rob was knowledgeable on the type of doors and windows I needed. And the additional work involved. Thru the process of install they discovered rotted wood which they replaced without hesitation and came in within the budget. Great team of workers."

"Pontes Painting did a fantastic job scraping, power washing, doing small exterior repairs and completely transforming our house/trim/doors with a fresh coat of paint. Price is fair, crew are hardworking, polite, they left the yard clean at the end of each workday of any tools, debris, etc. Raphael is professional, conscientious and very easy to work with. Weâ  ll be calling him for any future projects we have."

Doors questions, answered by experts

Yes, you need to install a sill for an exterior door. A sill offers structural support for the doorframe and creates a place to install the threshold, which is essential for keeping water from seeping underneath the door and into the home. Door sills are not necessary for interior doors.

No, a storm door should not replace a regular door. It lacks the durability, insulation, and security of a proper exterior door. Most storm doors have lightweight frames and minimal locking hardware, and they aren’t meant to stand alone. While they work well as a backup to your main entry door, relying on one as your only barrier would likely lead to drafts, higher energy bills, and safety concerns.

Yes, prehung doors include a door jamb. Prehung doors are sold as a single piece with the door frame already constructed, including the hinges. The only part missing is the trim, which you add after fastening the door. They are more expensive than slab doors but are quicker and easier to install. Prehung doors come in an array of sizes, so there’s likely an option to fit any doorway you need.

You can often fit a new door slab into an old frame as long as the frame’s in decent shape. The frame needs to be solid, square, and free of warping or rot. The new door has to match the old one in width, height, and thickness, and the hinge and knob placements need to line up or be adjusted carefully. However, if your frame is damaged, swapping just the door won’t cut it. In that case, replacing the entire unit would be the best move for a smooth, secure installation.

The best material for a patio door depends on several factors, including your budget, local climate, and priorities like style, security, and maintenance. Wood offers a classic, high-end look but requires regular upkeep. Vinyl is a popular choice as it's affordable, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance, making it a durable option for active households. Fiberglass is another durable material that stands up well to heavy use. For superior security, steel is a low-maintenance option, though with fewer design choices. Finally, lightweight aluminum makes doors easy to open and close, which is ideal for homes with children. The right choice balances durability, aesthetics, ease of use, and the amount of maintenance you're willing to perform.
