"Chimney Chap did an excellent job replacing the termination cap on my Vermont Castings gas stove at a reasonable cost. The two technicians who performed the work were very professional and worked hard to overcome some unforeseen installation difficulties. From my initial e-mail to the installation of the cap, Chimney Chap was very responsive. Meanwhile, some other companies I contacted were unresponsive and less interested in performing a small installation project. I will surely contact Chimney Chap, Inc. in the future if I experience any problems with my gas stove."

"Michael was very knowledgeable about what we needed to do for the chimney of our 1915 built house. His inspection showed that we did not need to have the chimney swept and did not need a new liner. His service in fabricating the cap and installing it was excellent. I would recommend him to others."

"It took a couple calls to get through to Adail, but we spoke to him reasonably quickly. He came out to look within a day or two and said what I had thought, that the previous work was bad. He recommended stripping that area and re-doing shingles in that area, as well as sealing around the vent pipe. He also recommended putting flashing up around our other chimney. He said he was busy, but indicated he could get out in a couple of weeks. He admitted his price might be slightly higher than what we'd see from some people, but that he didn't skimp on the work. His price was slightly higher, but not more than ~10% over what others had quoted. We agreed to the work that day. This was on a Friday, and it happened to rain over the weekend and we got additional leaking. I messaged Adail to let him know about this and inquired about a vent cap for the chimney. We spoke briefly on Tuesday about this as well, and he said he wasn't sure it would need it. Rain was forecast for Thursday and Adail called me on Wednesday morning to say his previous job was cancelled and asked if we'd like to have the work done that day. Since I was having some other work done at the same time, I was home and he came out that day. I can only say good things about the work he did. He added a vent cap at no additional charge, replaced the roofing, added flashing to our chimney, and said he noticed that the cap of our roof was done wrong and did that work as well (also not charging extra). We had a pretty big storm on Thursday and had no leaking. While a bit informal in communication, he explained clearly all the work he did, and while I'm not an expert, he did extremely good work. He also coordinated with the other contractors that were out that day (adding a lining to our chimney) so as not to interfere with their work. His speed in getting this work done also meant a lot to us."

"They did a great job. They solved all the problems I had with the chimney and it’s been working perfectly ever since. They also fixed a problem on the roof around the chimney; they replaced the wood around the chimney with a material that would never rot, so they fixed it even better than it was before. It took them a couple of days to do the work. They took care of all the cleanup as well. We've been real happy with them."

"They called ahead of time to confirm appointment and arrived early. When I arrived they had already done a visual inspection on the exterior. The two gentleman were polite, explained things when asked about items, and were able to provide a qualitative assessment of the chimney. They also explained the scope of work that it needed and an approximate cost. Easy to work with and talk to, would recommend to others.

"Edwin was on time and preformed exactly what was discussed. He installed a new chimney insert and re-pointed the chimney. The work came out excellent! I would hire him again and recommend his team to anyone who is interested in this kind of service."

FAQs for chimney cap service projects in Marblehead, MA

Chimney caps may be installed by a few different professionals, including a chimney sweep or a mason that specializes in fireplaces and chimneys. A gas fireplace technician is the best person to install a chimney cap on a gas log fireplace vent to be sure the cap is appropriate for the application.

A chimney cap costs about $300 on average. The prices range from about $75 to $1,000, depending on the material, size, any repairs needed, and if your chimney cap requires custom fabrication. Chimney caps are usually made from galvanized steel, copper, or stainless steel. Additional costs may include hiring a chimney sweep to clean the chimney before a cap is installed.

Yes, it’s worth capping a chimney. Here are several reasons to install a chimney cap:

  • Keep out rain, snow, wildlife, and other debris

  • Help prevent chimney fires

  • Reduce your chimney’s exposure to moisture

  • Maintain your chimney flue liner

  • Help reduce energy bills by helping regulate your home’s temperature

Typically, a chimney cap will last from three to 25 years. This wide range is due to variables like climate, the material the cap is made from, and how often you use your fireplace. Regular inspections and maintenance can help extend the life of your chimney cap.

The best style of chimney cap for a brick chimney is one that fits tightly around the brick top of the chimney. The cap should have a screen to fully enclose it to keep animals out. The best materials include stainless steel, copper, or aluminum that fit tightly or are custom fabricated for a perfect fit on your chimney.
