"Contacted S&S via Angies List to get a quote on some electrical work. Scott and his team were very responsive and helpful. It turns out that I did not use S&S for this work at this time, but I wanted to comment favorably on their customer service. Would consider them for future work and recommend others consider them."

"David did an amazing job. He called me very quickly after I signed up on Angi. He set up a time to do the job within 4 days. He got both jobs done in a very short amount of time. His price was really reasonable. I would not hesitate to hire David again!"

Customers say: Quality work

"They contacted me within an hour of my request and explained the procedure for dealing with the electrical that had been pulled down from the house by a tree during the 3/2 storm. Very easy to work with and they were there every step of the way. Came out the next morning took care of the work needed, charged a very fair price and he then went to town hall to contact wiring inspector who came out 30 minutes later. Everything went smoothly thanks to Eric's overseeing the entire process. Wouldn't hesitate to hire again. Very happy to have found Sylvia Electric!"

"Incredible service from Thomas. He was incredibly professional and fast with his work. I told him I wanted recessed lighting and wires run for a projector I wanted installed. He gave me a full run down of what he planned on doing along with an expected time frame. Thomas got all the work done within just a few hours and at what I feel was a very reasonable price."

"I had an excellent experience with Andy and his team. I had difficulty finding a competent electrician in my area until I broadened my search and found Eight Electric. Very competent, indeed! At our house, we wanted to move our underground service (relocated the utility power meter to an off-house free-standing support), add a custom industrial remote contactor, add a ground wire and demote the main panel to a distribution panel. This was not a trivial effort to do in one day, especially since the surface was at freezing temps and groundwater filled the trench on the day of work. Eight Electric worked with me to understand my exact requirements, set up the permit and coordinated with the utility. Two experienced electricians and two apprenticing electricians arrived and dug into the task, quite literally. In the end, and despite some late afternoon curveballs, Andy & Co. finished the task and the electrical inspector signed off all in the same day. Andy was easy to work with, reliable, communicated effectively by email, and had office help to organize the paperwork. I especially appreciated that I was allowed to feel I was a valued partner in this effort. I had very strict requirements and so monitored the day's activities -- the electricians did not freak out from the scrutiny, but instead were confident of their expertise. A win, win for all!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

There are a few ways to reduce your electricity bills if you use window AC units to keep cool. Set the unit temperature at least 1 degree higher than it is currently to reduce costs. Keep the unit clean for it to run efficiently. You may want to hire a window AC specialist near you to inspect the unit once a year and keep it in tip-top shape.

You should never use a plug with burn marks because it can cause a fire or even an electrical shock. The burn marks could be caused by a dangerous underlying electrical problem, so it’s important to call a qualified electrician right away.

Many homes have a 200-amp service, which requires a 2-inch electrical meter riser. Larger homes or homes that require more energy for several appliances and devices may have a 400-amp service. For 400-amp service, opt for a 4-inch electrical meter riser.

In most cases, line wires are located at the bottom of a panel or device, while load wires are located at the top. Line wires are generally black, while load wires are typically red or black. To tell for sure, you can use a multimeter or volt pen to test the wire. A live or line wire will always carry a charge, while a load wire will only carry a charge when it’s in use.

The wrong-sized wire can lead to several safety hazards, including structural fires, surges, power outages from tripped breakers, and electrocution. It’s important to follow the American Wire Gauge system and the National Electrical Code guidelines to safely wire a home. Electrical wiring is not safe for homeowners to handle and is best left to a licensed electrician.
