"Contacted S&S via Angies List to get a quote on some electrical work. Scott and his team were very responsive and helpful. It turns out that I did not use S&S for this work at this time, but I wanted to comment favorably on their customer service. Would consider them for future work and recommend others consider them."

Customers say: True professional

"They first came a few weeks prior to replace some breakers since I was having issues with my lights and told me about the damage that was happening due to a leaky outside cable coming into the circuit breaker.  They also showed me the damage and explained it thoroughly to me.  They let me know it wasn't something I had to do immediately but would need to be done.
I requested a quote and they came out again to give me an estimate.  I then booked them to come out and was given a date and time along with letting me know I would be without power for 4-5 hours.
They arrived as scheduled and the job was done in about 5 hours at the cost quoted.
They were friendly, professional, prompt, and responsive.  I would definitely recommend them for any electrical issues.

Customers say: Quality work

"I hired Matt when I was in the process of converting from a natural gas wall oven and cooktop to electrical versions. There had to be a lot of rewiring done, and he and his men did a great job. They arrived promptly at the agreed time to do the preliminary work and then arranged to come at the same time as the appliance installers to finish the job. Matt even took the time to fix my doorbell for me when I mentioned that it had not worked for years :-) It was clear that they are incredibly competent and the job went very smoothly. I would definitely hire them again if I need electrical work done in the future. Thanks Matt!!"

"They contacted me within an hour of my request and explained the procedure for dealing with the electrical that had been pulled down from the house by a tree during the 3/2 storm. Very easy to work with and they were there every step of the way. Came out the next morning took care of the work needed, charged a very fair price and he then went to town hall to contact wiring inspector who came out 30 minutes later. Everything went smoothly thanks to Eric's overseeing the entire process. Wouldn't hesitate to hire again. Very happy to have found Sylvia Electric!"

"This is the second project we hired Jared for. This was a total bathroom remodel and he updated all electrical outlets, new shower fan, gfi outlets, recessed lighting, electric baseboard with proper breaker. He is always on time. Does clean work. Makes suggestions to save money without compromising safety. Worked with us throughout the project and made adjustments to original design flawlessly. I will be hiring him again in the future for our kitchen remodel. We highly recommend Jared and Southcoast Electrical Services"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

In New Bedford, homeowners are updating historic properties with modern electrical panel upgrades and smart home features while maintaining original charm. Popular trends include installing EV charging stations, whole-house generators for storm resilience, and energy-efficient LED lighting. GFCI outlets and USB charging ports are common upgrades, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Outdoor lighting and historic home rewiring are also in high demand.

Helpful?

New homeowners in New Bedford should start with a thorough electrical inspection, focusing on the panel, grounding, and circuit capacity. Upgrading to GFCI outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, and basements is essential for safety. Replacing outdated wiring, such as knob-and-tube, and installing surge protection are wise steps. Consider planning for EV charging and modern smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to meet local safety standards.

Helpful?

Watch for outdated panels, aluminum wiring, or knob-and-tube systems in New Bedford homes—these can quickly escalate into major repairs. If multiple outlets on one circuit fail, breaker trips become more frequent, or electrical odors worsen, it’s time for an electrical inspection. The city’s coastal climate and older building stock make early intervention crucial to prevent extensive electrical damage.

Helpful?

Electrical projects in New Bedford, especially in older or historic homes, often intersect with HVAC, plumbing, or security systems due to shared wall cavities and interconnected utilities. Upgrades like panel replacements or rewiring may require adjustments to grounding or affect nearby plumbing. Moisture from basements can impact multiple systems, so it’s important to assess how your planned electrical work could influence other home systems.

Helpful?

In New Bedford, flickering lights when appliances run, burning smells from outlets, frequent breaker trips, or sparking switches are strong indicators you need electrical work. If you notice dimming lights only when HVAC systems start, it may be a utility or HVAC concern. Plumbing leaks near electrical fixtures require urgent attention, as coastal humidity and older wiring in historic homes can accelerate electrical issues.
