"Paul and his team were extremely professional, meticulous, easy to work with, and kind. They arrived early each day, put in long hours, and paid attention to details that even I had not noticed! They went above and beyond to make our house look like a brand new home— from carefully caulking cracks, painting window shutters and the garage and front door columns too. Paul checked in with questions along the way that showed how conscientious he is— from painting an exterior AC unit (an eyesore previously) to the exterior foundational wall color selection and even removing gunk around a basement window— he took his time and the work was thorough and beautiful. We requested that he strip paint from one of the columns holding up our deck to match the other columns and the result is amazing— looks exactly like the others. On top of all this, the team got the job done in great time! Not at all rushed but impressively efficient. I can't recommend Olde English Painting enough. All our neighbors keep saying our house looks so beautiful!"

"Peter came out to my house to give me my estimate. We walked the property together so he could ask any necessary questions about the paint job. Peter noticed some rotted boards that was present that I haven't noticed before. He told me not to worry his guys could take care of that too. He explained how they prepped the house so the paint job lasted. Peter was very knowledgeable when he was explaining the whole paint process. When his guys showed up for work they were very polite and professional. Everyday before it ended they spent about a hour cleaning up and picking up the yard so it was presentable and moved the ladders close to the house so the kids didn't get hurt while playing in the yard. I will be needing the interior of my house painted and North Shore Painting will be the only phone call for that task."

"We had all the interior of our home painted and some carpentry work done as well. In addition, we had our kitchen cabinets painted white to modernize the appearance. We had a railing placed in our home. The Quality of the Painting was Exceptional. The painters did an outstanding job. Their work was of high quality and detailed oriented. They were always on time and extremely neat. It was a pleasure to have the painters in our home. Our home looks refreshed and beautiful. We would hire Quality Preferred Painting again. "I called Supreme Painters for ceiling work/painting, deck work, various paint projects and rotted wood. The owner showed up within hours of calling, which was great, and told me he would send me a proposal within a few days. After 1 week of not receiving anything, I texted him, and he did not respond, I called a few days later and he finally called back saying he would email me a proposal within a few days... still nothing. I called again and never got a response. This guy got a Superior Service Award? Please take away his service award. UPDATED: The vendor did a good job, his workers were courteous"

"Randymars was professional from start to end of my project. I had experienced a flood in my basement and my walls and sink cabinet were destroyed. They provided me with a quote in a timely fashion and were able to start the project that same week. The crew were timely, polite, and were very respectful of my property. They worked hard and completed the project within three days. They restored my garage and basement walls to perfection and installed a new cabinet for my sink with expertise. I would definitely hire Randymars again."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Many decking oils can help slow down algae growth, but they don't completely stop it. These oils work by sealing the wood, which reduces moisture and, therefore, algae growth. Some decking oils also help protect against UV damage, but they need to be reapplied according to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure the decking stays protected.

It is definitely worth sanding a deck to ensure the wood absorbs new stain. Sanding a deck removes the outer layers of aging wood, allowing the stain to penetrate. It also gives a fresh look to the entire surface as part of the deck refinishing process. Without sanding, your stain or sealant is less likely to absorb into the wood. While sanding a deck is a time-intensive project, the rewards are noticeable and long-lasting.

The best way to protect a deck is to prevent damage from UV light, water, mold, mildew, insects, and abrasive cleaning methods. Sweep regularly to prevent debris that hides bugs and traps moisture that can result in mold or mildew growth. Use a deck cleaner once a year to remove algae, mold, and mildew. Avoid using pressure washers on high, as they can damage the wood. Applying a deck sealant can protect the wood from UV and water damage, and adding shade can also reduce sunlight damage.

Whether to paint or stain a deck depends on your personal preference for appearance and budget. Stain provides a natural look with a range of undertones, is typically less expensive, and may only require one coat, but it does not last as long as paint. Paint offers a sleeker finish with a virtually unlimited color palette. Both options will protect your deck from outdoor elements like rain, snow, and general wear and tear.

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.
