"It was a stressful moment when Our water heater was broken, but we were fortunate to get the help from Ken. He installed a new water heater for us practically on the next business day. Ken did everything possible to ensure the success of the installation. He checked for the dimension of our old model, our storage space, and the pan underneath the water heater. On the day of installation Ken went to at least three stores to purchase a brand new water heater that is free of damages. Our water heater is in a utility room with a stacked washer dryer blocking the entrance. Ken disconnected and moved the washer dryer and reconnected it after the service. Ken was extremely capable and made new water pipe connections that fits the new height of our water heater. Ken is extremely easy to reach by a phone call and talked straight to all my questions. In summary Ken get us out of an emergency with his seasoned expertise and outstanding customer services."

"Jeff Griffin really knows heating & plumbing! He also recommended 2 excellent 3rd-party companies: 1. Unlimited Removal and Demolition - to drain, cut up, & remove old oil tank; abate asbestos from, and remove, old boiler; remove oil filler pipes & patch foundation with cement 2. Boxford Chimney Sweep - to run a new flue liner and install a new stainless steel chimney cap We hired J.Griffin Heating & Plumbing to disconnect an ancient "snowman-style" oil-fueled steam boiler with attached "instant" water heater, and replace it with a gas boiler & free-standing gas water heater. Fast. Efficient. Clean. Pleasant & willing to answer all of our questions. All 3 companies provided very high quality experiences! I would hire any/all of them again. Bonuses: Sandy Griffin (with JGH&P), & Daniela Ibanez (with UR&D) provided excellent & timely email & phone support. 5 Stars all around!!"

"I've called Sila before to work on my HVAC unit and realized they offer plumbing services when my tank-less water heater stopped working. They were able to come by that day I called to see what was wrong. Once they were onsite they deterimed my hot water valve stopped working and were able to replace it and got my hot water working in no time."

"Rob had recently replaced my kitchen and bathroom faucets and I called him to see if he could now replace my gas water heater. I was happily surprised when he said he’d be out within a couple of days and I was REALLY pleased with his estimate. For both jobs, Rob showed up when he said would and was both fast and efficient. He’s a great guy - dependable, reasonable, professional and focused on providing good service to his customers. Rob is my “go to” plumber from now on!"

"They were very prompt and made sure my HVAC unit, tankless hot water heater and fireplace were all in order prior to the sale of my condo unit. Although it was much more than $99 I had expected to spend, the maintenance work was needed."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can convert a gas water heater to an electric one, but it is a complex process. You will need to ensure there is adequate power for the new electric unit, as they require more power than gas models. The project also involves safely closing off the gas lines and ventilation, and some cities may require a permit for the conversion. The cost can range from $1,500 to $4,100, depending on the installation scope, plumbing and electrical work, and the water heater model. For an accurate quote, it's best to contact a local professional. Also, be aware that your monthly utility bills may increase after the conversion, as natural gas is typically cheaper than electricity.

A tankless water heater can last up to 20 years, which is nearly double the lifespan of a conventional tank heater. However, their longevity is highly dependent on several factors. With proper installation and regular maintenance, such as descaling to prevent mineral buildup from hard water, you can expect a lifespan of 15 to 20 years. Without proper care, a tankless unit may begin to fail in as little as 12 years. Other factors that affect its lifespan include household usage and the quality of the local water supply. While they have a higher upfront cost, their energy savings, smaller size, and longer life make them a worthwhile investment for many homeowners.

Yes, most municipalities have codes that require water heaters to have pans. A pan is necessary when a water heater or hot water storage tank is installed in an area where water leakage could cause damage, such as an attic, second floor, or finished basement. Tankless water heaters are not required to have a pan since there is no storage tank.

Most hot water heater manufacturers recommend replacing the anode rod about once every three to five years. Anode rods sacrifice themselves by collecting iron, limestone, and other minerals that would otherwise corrode your hot water heater tank. This abuse wears them out long before your water heater does. Check the rod when you remove it and replace it if more than 50% of the metal has been consumed. Check the rod more frequently if you have hard water or use a water softener.

No, you’ll need to drain the tank before changing a water heater element, as the water heater element sticks through the side of the tank and uses a gasket to prevent water from pouring out. However, you don’t always need to drain it completely. If you’re only replacing the upper heating element, you can drain the tank until the water line is below the element. If you’re replacing the lower element, you’ll need to drain the whole thing.
