"Kennon always does a good job. He responds quickly with honest and balanced Engineering Prescriptions. As a Custom Home Builder and remodeler, there have been a few times where we really needed an answer and engineered fix to move forward on what we had discovered. "Hiring Kennon was a great decision and I highly recommend him. I was in a jam and needed someone to come out quickly to my house and perform a structural engineering report. Kennon came out the next day. He was very thorough, answered all my questions, and most important, understood the time urgency. I had the report the next day. I had previously hired another engineer who took two weeks to do the same type of report and it was nowhere near as coherent as Kennon's. I would highly recommend Kennon for structural engineering needs."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

A freestanding brick wall that's only one brick thick can usually stand six to eight feet high. If you need a higher wall, it should be at least two bricks thick for adequate stability, and it might require a footing to support the added weight. Additionally, some areas have regulations and codes dictating how high a brick wall can be, so check with local code enforcers to ensure your proposed wall complies with any regulations.

The best way to determine if ceiling cracks are structural is to hire a ceiling contractor to inspect the cracks and provide a professional opinion. That said, you might be able to make an educated guess based on the size and appearance of the crack. Larger cracks, cracks accompanied by sagging or discoloration, and cracks that travel from the ceiling down the walls are all signs of structural issues.

You need to hire a structural engineer when building or modifying any component with a structural load in your home. Common situations where you would need a structural engineer include home inspections when buying or selling a home, investigating possible issues with your foundation, beams, load-bearing walls, or chimneys, breaking ground on a new home or structure on your property, and renovating an old part of your home that could threaten any structural integrity. Home additions and bump-outs also require an engineer.

Yes, professionals reinforce the foundation with additional supports or piers to prevent future sinking.

It's safe to assume that all exterior walls are load-bearing, or at least have load-bearing characteristics. Some older homes feature porches or bump-outs that don't rest on the home's foundation. However, they still must carry the weight of the roof section they support. Walls containing floor-to-ceiling glass or other non-structural elements must use post and beam configurations to meet load-bearing criteria.
