"Hiring Kennon was a great decision and I highly recommend him. I was in a jam and needed someone to come out quickly to my house and perform a structural engineering report. Kennon came out the next day. He was very thorough, answered all my questions, and most important, understood the time urgency. I had the report the next day. I had previously hired another engineer who took two weeks to do the same type of report and it was nowhere near as coherent as Kennon's. I would highly recommend Kennon for structural engineering needs."

"Choosing Rose de Nola for our room addition and bath remodel was the best decision we've ever made concerning our home. We got their name from a friend who had used them to build a loft on their garage. Our project started by converting two bedrooms to a second master suite with a bathroom and renovating an existing bathroom. . We weren't quite sure what we wanted. We had limited space and we needed someone who could "think outside the box." We met with several other contractors, but when Jordan shared his vision for our project, we knew we had truly found someone with a gift. We were amazed with the attention to detail, his ability to finish on time, and his willingness to stay within our budget. They attended to our project as if they were working on their home. The designer was especially concerned with making the new addition fit architecturally with the pre-existing 15 year old structure. During the 10 month project, our project manager was either on site or just a phone call away. You could tell that he had put tremendous effort into building relationships with sub-contractors who could meet his expectations. It's been two years since our project was finished. I can still pick up the phone and call Jordan for anything. Within two rings, he is ready to personally handle a warranty issue or stop by to tighten the hinges on a door. That's why I'm always happy to provide a review for them. We've never had that kind of service and care from anyone we've worked with. Someday, I'm going to buy a piece of land and build a brand new home. Rose de Nola will handle everything when that happens."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

If you intend to do the majority of the work yourself, you can pay to hire an architect or a structural engineer to ensure your home remains structurally sound. They can help with the planning to make sure everything is up to code and safe for your family. On the other hand, if you’re not sure your home will be completely safe when you’ve completed the project, let a pro do the job.

Cathedral ceilings make a statement in your home, but at the cost of your attic space. Normal attics are wide open, which allows warm air to move around and exit your home. Because of this, cathedral ceilings make your home less energy efficient and put your ceiling at risk of venting issues if you’re not careful. They also reduce your attic storage space, potentially cause an echo, and even make it harder to change a light bulb.

Yes. Foundation walls are always load-bearing.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

You need to hire a structural engineer when building or modifying any component with a structural load in your home. Common situations where you would need a structural engineer include home inspections when buying or selling a home, investigating possible issues with your foundation, beams, load-bearing walls, or chimneys, breaking ground on a new home or structure on your property, and renovating an old part of your home that could threaten any structural integrity. Home additions and bump-outs also require an engineer.
