Birch or maple plywoods have tight grain patterns and are dense species that hold up well over time and even in damp environments with proper sealing. For most purposes, you should go with wood that’s at least 3/4-inch thick for DIY closet shelves. This is the standard thickness for solid wood or MDF shelving and should be able to hold a good amount of weight (around 80 pounds for MDF and 130 pounds for plywood). If you’re storing tools, camera equipment, or other heavier items, you can go up to 1 1/4-inch thickness for maximum strength and durability.

The weight capacity depends on the construction method and the quality of the hardware.  Basic side-mount slides often support 50 pounds, but less expensive versions may be rated lower. Properly built drawers with dado joints and heavy-duty, full-extension slides can typically support between 75 and 100 lbs. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s weight rating for your specific drawer slides.

Custom cabinets are typically more expensive than prefabricated cabinet options, but the work often reflects the quality. Custom cabinets tend to last 20 or more years, but the time it takes to install them is typically longer than other cabinets—roughly 6 to 8 weeks on average from the time of ordering. However, a major benefit is the ability to personalize every aspect of your cabinetry, from cabinet hardware to custom paint colors.
