Customers say: Quality work

"I hired Lamp Property Development to build my office building for me. They did a great job on the design! They also did a great job on the construction, from the ground up. I was so pleased with Matthew Lamp and his crew. They were professional and had everything done on time. I was very happy with the entire experience and would highly recommend them for whatever project you are about to undertake. I used them for several projects and they are my number one go to contractor."

"Samuel is extremely competent, timely, responsive, and transparent. Unfortunately, we had a roof installed a few years ago by a company who cut corners, and STMZ came to repair two separate leaks in the “new” roof. He documented every step of the process with photos, and explained what he was doing. (Most contractors, in my experience, do not take the time to explain the process to you!) I highly recommend his services, and if we ever need to replace the roof, STMZ will be the company we will call."

"Marcio responded quickly to my inquires. He did a great job of explaining and demonstrating the problem areas of the existing roof with photos. Marcio and his team were always prompt. (In fact, he was usually a little early.) His team was efficient and cleaned the area at the end of each day. He also provided photos of the work while it was in progress. The job was completed on time in spite of a delay caused by unexpected rain. Marcio also did some roofing work for my mother in the past. Both of us are pleased with the end result and the price."

"The installation went very well, so much so, I hired Malcolm to come back to install shutters. Malcolm is honest and straight up. He works hard. I cannot tell you how many times I have had things done only to have the job done half way, the material substandard, etc. It has been a long time since I have found someone like Malcolm and his crew. I would definitely hire him again. This service was done a little over a year ago. I like to wait to review to make sure of the project. Thank you, Malcolm."

"Found Destre on Angi after another contractor came out and completely botched the job. Wanted to replace the weather stripping around rear patio door. The previous contractor ruined the bottom seal on the door and left us with a/c escaping and the flys and mosquitoes coming in. Called and spoke to Destre and he came out within an hour. Surveyed the damage and was off to Home Depot to get replacement parts. Could not find but resourcefully found a clear plastic one. Installed and all has been fine ever since. In speaking with Destre learned his experience in all types of home repair. The thing I liked best is he commented “I will not stop working until the job is completed to your satisfaction”. I paid his quoted price and added a generous tip for his diligence and great attitude. I have finally found my home repairman."

"I hired Castillo Construction to do emergency repairs to my home after my neighbor's tree fell on it and caused major damage to the house and completely destroyed my garage. Unfortunately, this was the second time that the same tree had fallen on my house causing major damage. The first time, about half of the tree fell and my whole house was gutted. My first contractor was a crook and wasn't even finished with the renovations a year later when the rest of the tree fell. Having had such a horrible experience with my first contractor, I was very picky about who I would hire for this round of renovations and repairs. Alfonso and his team were very responsive with my inquiries for a site visit, estimate, and references. He was also understanding of the trouble I had been through over the last year and was willing to jump through all the hoops I put up to make sure that he was an honest contractor who wasn't trying to make a quick buck without doing the work. As soon as my insurance company issued the first check, his crew got to work. They replaced my roof, laid new wood floors throughout the entire house, repaired the ceiling in two rooms where the tree had come through, painted the interior rooms that had been damaged, rebuilt damaged kitchen cabinet, demolished and rebuilt the two-car garage and patio roof, upgrade electrical box to garage, repainted the exterior of the house, installed new gutters and downspouts, and replaced air conditioning compressor. I'm probably forgetting so many details about what was done. I'll just say that it was a lot of work and they completed it quickly and beautifully. My former contractor had left several things inside the house unfinished such as no window sills on several windows and tile missing in the bathroom or incorrectly installed. I was going to have to pay out of pocket to get these things taken care of since I was fighting with my old contractor over what he owed me. When I asked Alfonso for an estimate to complete this work while they were doing all the other repairs, he told me not to worry about it. He finished all of the unfinished items in the house without asking for a dime. It wasn't a lot of work but he sympathized with my situation he saved me several hundred dollars instead of taking advantage. His crews were always extremely polite and answered any questions I had about what they were doing. They also kept a very clean work site, making sure that all materials and tools were put away and organized every day before they left for the day. Even when Alfonso and I had a disagreement about the air compressor that was installed, he was willing to bend to what I wanted, and what had originally been agreed upon, at a financial loss to himself in order to make things right with the customer. After having been through the ringer over the last year and a half, it was refreshing to have a contractor who was honest and didn't try to take advantage of a woman navigating in a largely male-dominated field."

"In August of 2016 Southeast Louisiana (Livingston, East Baton Rouge and Ascension Parishes) had over 41" of Local and Surrounding Areas of Rain that FLOODED the areas. OVER FOUR HOUNDRED THOUSAND (400,000) Homes and Businesses were DEVISTATED by the massive flooding. Our Two-Story Home in Denham Springs, LA (Watson Community) had over two feet of Flood, Swamp, Sewer Water for four days. The flood water DEVISTATED our Downstairs Living Room, Master Bedroom, Bathroom and Closets, Kitchen/Dining Room, Half-Bath and Stairwell Storage Area, along with ALL THE CONTENTS; Furniture, Appliances, Perisomal Belongings and etc. Our Garage along with it's contents were DESTROYED. We also lost TWO Vehicles (paid for... No Vehicle Payments) to the Flood, ALONG WITH ANYTHING ON OUR POURCHES AND IN THE YARD. We were STRANDED in our Home and could not leave via Vehicle for FOUR DAYS, luckily, we had Neighbors who had boats and checked on the Neighborhood. We NEVER SAW ANY FEMA workers or Charity organizations during the time we were flooded. After the flood, one day a Church group came into our Neighborhood with boxed lunches. Because of ALL the Citizens of Southeast Louisiana that were affected by the Flood, it was IMPOSSIBLE to find RELIABLE, HONEST and COMPENTENT Crafts to Re-Build our DEVISTATED Home. We contacted MANY Contractors who were Recommended by Neighbors and Friends, BUT the Contracts these Contractors wanted us to sign were RIDICULOUS! The Contracts Basically Stated that if the Contractor DID NOT PAY the various Crafts for the work performed, the Crafts could FILE SUITE AGAINST US for Payment. Also, the Contracts stated that any Insurance Money we received for the Flood Damage was to be place in Escrow, a separated Bank Account, so the Contractor could have ACCESS to the MONEY...??? My wife and I did MOST of the Demolishing (removing, Sheetrock, Insulation, Carpeting, Harwood Flooring and etc.). Luckily one day, one of our nice neighbors had the Live Oak Football Team over at his house helping out. The neighbor came over and asked if we needed any Heavy Lifting help. We had the team dissemble and remove our Custom Built Bernhard (North Carolina) Massive Bedroom Suite, with Dresser, Armoire and TV Hutch, along with our NEW 6 month old King Sized Sleep Number Bed, Massive Custom Built Bernhard (North Carolina) Dining Room Table and Hutch Buffet Cabinet, Sectional Sofa and other items to or front porch so FEMA could inventory the damaged items. We finally decided to Sub-Contract the Crafts ourselves, which was a NIGHTMARE. MOST of the Crafts we finally hired via “word of mouth” or Home Depot, were inexperienced and did a POOR JOB, Including an Established Local Flooring Business Located in Denham Springs, LA. I started calling ALL the Cabinet Makers in Denham Springs, Baton Rouge, Gonzales and MOST of SE Louisiana. LUCKILY, I FOUND David DeVall to make our Kitchen, Master Bath and Hal-Bath Cabinets, along with finishing up our Custom Shower and Installing the Shower Door. David DeVall did a GREAT JOB in building our Custom Cabinets and the work on our shower! David had gave me a quote to install the flooring and Custom Shower, I WISH I HAD USED David DeVall TO DO THE WORK NOW, because I AM NOT HAPPY WITH THE SHOWER AND FLOORING WORK done by the Established Local Flooring Business Located in Denham Springs, LA. We STILL have some jobs to be finished; woodwork around our fireplace and woodwork on the Livingroom/Kitchen Support Column, which was “POORLY” done by the man who we hired for Sheetrock and Painting (which the man and his crew did a poor job)… I will probably get David to finish up the woodworking. We still need our Fireplace removed and a New Fireplace Installed, I don’t know if David does this work. We also need Shelves built for our Master Closet and Pantry, I was thing of doing this myself but have not felt like doing the work. I RECOMMEND David DeVall for any Cabinetry work, Kitchen/Bath, Flooring and etc. or any other jobs he can do."

FAQs for contractor service projects in Claiborne, LA

Generally, general contractors charge between $50 and $150 hourly, though not every contractor charges by the hour. If charging based on the project, you can expect a markup of 10% to 20% of the construction cost. You can expect to pay between $300 and $500 daily if charged by the day.

General contractors are the ones that coordinate home construction projects. They are in charge of the day-to-day oversight of the subcontractors to ensure that the project is completed on time and to resolve problems as they arise. General contractors:

  • Complete pre-construction planning, both with the customer and crew

  • Provide realistic cost estimates

  • Develop construction timelines

  • Ensure deadlines are met

  • Acquire permits as needed

  • Purchase supplies and materials

Before hiring a general contractor for your home project, it’s a great idea to write down a list of questions to discuss with each prospect. Some example questions to get you started include:

  • Which types of insurance do you carry?

  • Can you provide a list of references?

  • What is the expected timeline for this project?

  • How will my project be supervised?

  • Will you hire subcontractors for the job?

  • What is the best way to communicate changes?

  • Will you obtain all of the required building permits?

While city and state laws vary on general contractor licensing requirements, hiring an unlicensed general contractor could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local general contractor guidelines for your area.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

Yes, most general contractors require a down payment for project completion. A reasonable down payment for a contractor is 10% to 25% of the total project cost, though that will vary based on project size and location. The down payment helps cover the upfront costs of materials and permits and helps ensure payment for the project at hand.
