"I had just moved in, with the plan to install attic insulation asap. Kentucky was unseasonably cold, with two snowstorms back to back as soon as I arrived. I reached out for estimates because the furnace was running constantly and it was still cold! Reliable Insulation came the same day, gave me an estimate that met my expectations and blew insulation in two days later, before the other companies could schedule an estimate. Rose also didn’t want me to have an astronomical heating bill! The crew was professional, polite, answered all of my questions and concerns, barely made anything to clean up (which they did). Rose even noticed that a drainage pipe from the hot water heater in the attic was disconnected - I would never have known. Thanks to her I called a plumber right away and a potential for a watery mess in the attic avoided! If you need help, Reliable Insulation has your back!"

"Made a mess, insulation droppings on the floor and covered up electrical wiring and junction boxes. Used this in an unfinished basement and it caused problems when it came time to finish."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

R-30 insulation is better for higher thermal resistance, but whether it’s "better" depends on the application. R-30 is much thicker and suited for areas like attics or floors in cold climates, where more insulation is required. R-13, on the other hand, is thinner and works well for 2x4 walls or milder climates where less insulation is sufficient. Choosing between R-13 and R-30 depends on the area being insulated and the climate. For example, R-30 provides more insulation but may not fit everywhere in your home.

The best way to reduce heat upstairs is to release it by opening a window. Hot air rises, and if you can create some airflow by opening a window upstairs and also one on a lower level, the hot air should be pushed out of the home. Remember that fans pointing out the window do a much better job of circulating air than fans pointing into the home.

Natural fiber batts and spray foam insulation both work great for soundproofing. Newer materials, such as hemp batts, are more expensive but more effective for insulation and sound blocking. They are also more sustainable. There is also a professional system called Blow-In Blanket Insulation (BIBS) that is soundproof and moisture-resistant. However, BIBS must be installed professionally and can be a costly investment.

In some areas, insulation companies require a special license, while some states only require them to hold general contractor licenses. Some municipalities may not mandate any license, although you should always ensure a contractor is fully insured. You can use Angi’s license lookup tool to confirm whether or not an insulation contractor you’re considering holds the necessary license for your area. You can also contact the company for information regarding licenses, certifications, and insurance.

Yes, proper insulation in your attic or ceiling can help prevent ice dams. When attic spaces are too warm, they cause the snow on the roof over those areas to melt more quickly than the rest of the roof and then travel downward to a colder section of the roof where they refreeze. If less heat is allowed to escape from underneath the roof, snow will melt at a more consistent rate, making ice dams less likely.
