" We met Thermal Shield at the WSAZ Home & Garden Show in March 2025 about enclosing our porch. An estimate and contract was done on April 10, 2025. That contract stated that the project would be completed in 20 weeks. That date would have been August 30, 2025. The work has not started and no materials have been delivered. I paid a deposit of $11,000 (eleven thousand dollars). After several weeks of hearing nothing, I contacted the company and the owner. The response was text messages. I finally contacted the owner and stated that the work order had expired weeks ago and with no contact from them and no start on our project, I wanted a refund of the $11,000 deposit. I informed him that I would allow 30 days for the refund and if it was not received by November 1, 2025 that I would proceed with other action. There has been no communication. Just like the rest of your roof, a dormer will last as long as the life span of the materials used in construction. Slate, clay, and concrete roofing can last for over a century, whereas more standard roofing materials, such as asphalt shingles, last closer to 30 years. While upgrading your home’s plumbing is an invisible improvement that may be necessary to pass inspection but probably won’t increase your home’s asking price, there are other home improvements that do increase your home’s value, including: 

  • Refinishing hardwood floors or installing new carpet

  • Renovating a kitchen

  • Painting the walls

  • Increasing square footage with new bedroom or bathroom

  • Improving curb appeal with fresh paint and landscaping

Home office renovations are tax deductible in certain circumstances. First, you must be eligible to take a deduction for your home office. From a federal tax standpoint, you must be a business owner or self-employed to take this deduction. If you are an employee working from home, you cannot take the home office tax deduction federally. (If you pay state income taxes, some states do allow this deduction.) If you are eligible to take a home office deduction, you should be able to take deductions for your home office renovation.

Coffered ceilings can make a room look bigger, but they also run the risk of doing the opposite. Installation may require lowering the ceiling and creating a shorter ceiling height, while smaller panels and larger beams can create a busier textured look that creates the illusion of a smaller space. On the other hand, installing larger ceiling panels can create the illusion of more space.
