"Very professional & did a wonderful job. Levi, our installer was great, he explained everything, cleaned up every day, was on time and even took time to say hi & pet the dogs every day. He was exceptional. Also was very patient with me because I had to document the stages of the tub-to-shower install I took pictures at every stage."

"Eric came out to prepare an estimate and discuss the roofing job with us.  He provided wonderful advice and discussed the repairs needed on our house.  We were very impressed with his knowledge and hired him based upon his reputation on Angies List and also on our first impressions.  The crew did an excellent job.  The roof is beautiful and the carpenter did a wonderful job removing the metal porch awning and building a sturdy wooden awning in it's place.  In addition they carried the roof shingles onto the porch awning for a complete and balanced look.  Their professionalism and work ethic are evident with the final results.  We were so happy with Eric as our General Contractor, we asked him if he had a painting crew for another job."

"I have had exceptional experiences with them. They have been professional and punctual from initial estimate throughout work performed. They have done windows, roofing, siding, concrete work (sidewalks and porches). The price is reasonable, quality of work is excellent. I've never had to babysit them. I would definately hire them again. I have complete confidence in them."

Awnings questions, answered by experts

If you're handy, it might be worth trying to install retractable awnings yourself. Just keep in mind that motorized retractable awnings require much more know-how, and the risk of something costly going wrong (such as damaging your new awnings) is higher.

Mechanical awnings should be easy to install for the average person with some handyman skills.

Metal awnings last much longer than fabric thanks to their durability and resistance to fading, sun damage, and damage from the outside elements. They also need less maintenance than fabric options. Both items add curb appeal to your home, but you shouldn't expect either type of awning to add property value to your home.

To ensure the installation process goes smoothly, it's wise to ask a potential pro several questions. Key topics to cover include:

  • Licensing and Insurance: Do you have a professional license and insurance to perform this work? This is crucial as installing an awning into a home's exterior can be a complex job.

  • Cost Estimate: What was the price of similar jobs you've completed? Awning installation costs can vary based on size, design, and location, so this helps establish a general price range.

  • Project Timeline: How long will this project take to complete? Getting an estimated timeline provides peace of mind, even though unforeseen hurdles can occur.

  • Building Permits: Will I need a building permit for this project, and who is responsible for obtaining it? An experienced local contractor will be knowledgeable about local rules and regulations.

  • References and Portfolio: Do you have references from previous clients or photos of completed projects? Speaking with past clients and seeing previous work can give you insight into their experience and the quality of their work.

Minor fabric patching is DIY-friendly, but frame and mechanical repairs should be professionally handled.

The average cost to build a pergola ranges from $2,200 to $6,400, whereas the average cost of an awning ranges from $1,400 to $4,400, meaning that an awning tends to be less expensive to build or install than a pergola. Ultimately, the less expensive option depends on a few factors, including size, quality of materials used, and location.
