Small jobs welcome

"Their team showed up on time and did an excellent job on our insulation. They cleaned up so well that you can’t even tell they were here, except that the house is already warmer. They were polite and the price was right. Highly recommend!"

"The owner came out and offered a fair estimate. He was polite and thorough. We scheduled an installation date/time and two very polite workers showed up on time and got to work. They were courteous and cleaned up after themselves, using a shop-vac on the stairs. You couldn't tell they had been there. Efficient, courteous, and fair price."

"Good guy who goes above and beyond the contract. We hired him to add additional insulation in our attic. Not only did he do that, he also sealed the cracks and holes where bats where entering our house, and disposed of the guano from the bats at no additional cost! When he finished, the insulation, he recommended spraying the perimeter of the house for stink bugs, box elder bugs, and ants. We haven't seen any of them since he did that. His prices are very reasonable, and his knowledge is unbelievable for a man his age. Definitely would recommend him to anyone."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Selling a house with spray foam insulation can be challenging due to concerns about improper installation or its compatibility with the home's structure. If not applied correctly, spray foam can cause issues such as moisture buildup, cracking, or damage to wiring and plumbing. If the insulation didn't cure correctly, there are also flammability concerns. Removing or repairing this type of insulation can pose risks as well.

STC (Sound Transmission Class) is a rating that describes how well a building material or assembly blocks airborne sound. A higher STC rating means less noise will pass through the material, providing better sound reduction. This rating system applies to various building components, including windows, doors, flooring, drywall, and insulation.

For context, a typical single-pane window has an STC rating of around 25 (where normal conversations are audible), while a well-sealed, double-pane window can exceed STC 45 (blocking loud speech and most music). It is important to note that for some products, like soundproofing drywall, the STC rating refers to the entire wall system, not just the individual panel.

Additionally, STC ratings are most effective for measuring sound reduction at mid-to-high frequencies, such as human speech, and may not accurately reflect how well a material blocks low-frequency sounds like bass music or thunder. Because of these factors, it is recommended to consult a professional to determine the right STC-rated materials for your specific soundproofing needs.

Buying a house with vermiculite insulation is not recommended without going through a proper testing process. Vermiculite insulation can potentially contain asbestos, which poses health risks when disturbed. While it is possible to purchase a home with vermiculite insulation, you should have it tested for asbestos, and ensure proper containment if asbestos is present. If asbestos is present, you will want to hire a professional to remove it, ideally before you move in.

Most homeowners installing blown-in insulation as a one-off DIY project should simply rent a blower. They tend to be very heavy, and contractor-grade machines can cost $13,000 to $16,000.

Yes, basement insulation needs a vapor barrier due to its susceptibility to moisture seeping in from the outside of the house. You should install a moisture barrier before you install insulation or purchase insulation that comes prebuilt with a moisture barrier to avoid water damage in your insulation and costly mold and water remediation expenses.
