The main difference between an outdoor wood furnace versus an outdoor wood boiler is what each appliance is heating. An outdoor wood furnace burns wood to create heat, which warms the air and moves it through the ducts in your home. An outdoor wood boiler uses the heat from burning wood to warm water, which goes through pipes to radiators in the home.

In general, it’s a good idea to bleed air from your heaters at the start of every cold season, before you move your boiler system back into active mode. Early fall is a common time for this task. However, some heating systems don’t need much manual bleeding because of automatic bleed vents and other components.

Many states don’t have specific license requirements for HVAC repair companies, but your local city or county might. You can check online for local requirements and then Angi’s contractor licensing tool to see if the company you’re considering is licensed. Regardless of licensing, you should ensure your company is fully insured. We recommend checking to see if the company holds third-party certifications, including North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification and R-410A certification, which qualifies your provider to work with HVAC refrigerants.

Although baseboard heating is expensive to operate, hydronic style heaters usually aren’t as costly as other models because they maintain temperature longer than standard electric baseboard heaters. Since the liquid retains the heat longer, it prevents the thermostat from turning on and off as often, which makes it more energy efficient.

To figure out if your boiler is worth repairing or if you need to replace your boiler, first figure out how old the unit is. Boilers last 15 to 20 years, so if your unit is 15 years old or older, it may be better to replace the entire thing depending on the severity of the problems. If it’s not quite that old, then it’s probably worth repairing. Another thing to consider is whether your warranty covers any of the repair costs. If so, it may be worthwhile to repair your boiler to keep it running.
