"They added a dormer to my house and did a great job. Framed, sided, roofed, and added gutters. They cleaned up everyday, laid down floor protections, and showed up everyday they were supposed to. I would definitely use them again"

"Jose did beautiful work for our basement including wainscoting, baseboards, doors, window framing, and two custom built-ins. His attention to detail and thoroughness is unmatched! His recommendations for design were better than what I could have envisioned for the space. He is also so kind and the best thing that happened to our house that was in need of some character and charm — truly amazing work!!"

"Kevin and his team were wonderful. They were punctual, courteous, and very neat about clean up. He framed 5 windows and they all look crisp and bright. A+ on a thorough job which he stayed late to finish in just one day."

"We contracted H&MH to paint, finish some drywall, and put flooring down in our basement on a tight budget. The unfinished ceiling was painted too, which was not an easy task. All the work turned out great and way better than expected. Andy suggested flooring that was a perfect choice. We really love how it turned out. All of the crew were polite, professional, and hard working. Everything was done on time and under budget. We’ve hired this company for several projects and we’ve never been disappointed. We highly recommend them!"

"I had a great experience with the DeBartolo family. Terry understands that customers are concerned with budget but also want quality work. That being said, we spent a hefty amount...but a lot of work needed to be done. I didn’t shop around much because once I met Terry I was sold. We communicated back and forth for a while until we came up with a new design and game plan for the kitchen. Terry provides a list of trusted vendors, which we mostly stuck to. They work Monday-Friday 7am-3pm, are polite and professional, do quick and quality work, and clean up every day before they leave. Once they started to work on the house they found many structural problems (apparently our house was thrown together quickly in the 80s). They did their best to do corrective work that fit into our budget. They gutted the kitchen to the studs, updated and improved the electrical, and installed the flooring and cabinets. They repaired many things in the house that needed attention. We now have beautiful cabinets and granite countertops as well as uniform flooring throughout the main level. They are very experienced and deal with permits, Village codes, and inspections so you don’t have to. They get great contractor discounts as well. I would recommend them to anyone who needs work done. My new kitchen is perfect."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Begin by analyzing the blueprints and gathering the proper materials before framing a house. With the prep stages behind you, begin by framing the floor of a house on the newly set foundation. Exterior and interior walls come next, along with rough openings for doors and windows. Contractors will then add ceiling and roof rafters to finish things off.

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

Most load-bearing walls are exterior, though they can also be interior.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.
