"LUIS WAS PROFESSIONAL FROM THE MOMENT HE WALKED THRU THE DOOR TO ASSESS THE PROBLEM AND GIVE ME A WRITTEN QUOTE. HE AND HIS TEAM WERE PUNCTUAL, SHOWED A STRONG WORK ETHIC AND CLEANED UP EACH DAY OF THE PROJECT. I WAS AMAZED AT THE AMOUNT OF WORK INVOLVED IN INSTALLING A SUMP PUMP, REPAIRING A WATER SEEPAGE PROBLEM OF MANY YEARS. I FEEL THAT I GOT MORE THAN A FAIR PRICE FOR THE AMOUNT OF WORK ENTAILED! "The plumbing on the lower level of my place went haywire a couple of weeks ago and there was a smelly overflow of water coming out of the drain where my furnace and hot water heater drained condensation.  I called Charlie in a bit of a panic and left a message.  I waited a couple of hours and called back, and he picked up to let me know he was working on another job and would call me back.  Charlie called back around 9:30pm and told me that the issue is most likely related to my sump pump.  I told Charlie I had to leave for work at a certain time the next day so he said he could come over in the morning.  In the meanwhile, he told me not to run any water on the lower level.
When Charlie came over, he checked the electrical connection first, which was fine, and eventually found out that the sump pump had died.  So right away, he ran out to grab a new one and came back quickly to begin replacing the pump.  When he tested the new sump pump, it still didn't work, and he ended up finding a clog in the pipes.  He fixed that issue right away.  Charlie finished right by the time I had to leave for work.
Throughout the process, he took the time to explain what he was doing and gave me some tips along the way, which was much appreciated by this first time home buyer.  It was nice to experience someone so thorough and nice... Plus, Charlie gave me a good price on the services.  It's nice to know he's close by, too.  I'd give him a call again if I ran into any other plumbing issues.

"Daniel and co. did a very thorough job and informed me of what they were doing throughout the process. He was familiar with the flood control system a previous owner installed so he was able to identify the problem(s) quickly and get them fixed. He was straightforward and always quite open about the cost. We're kind of going to have to wait until the next big precipitation event to make sure the flood system is working again but at least there's no more water in our basement!"

"Everything was installed well. It did take two days, but I was getting a full system replacement of my entire HVAC system. The sales team gave me many options and I was really able to make a educated decision with no pressure. Thank you."

"We used Perma Seal for several big projects—waterproofing our basement and replacing our concrete back yard and sidewalks. We had drain tiles, sump pumps and a dehumidifier installed, along with extensive concrete work outside. We dealt with a variety of crews and found everyone to be very communicative, professional, and knowledgeable. They did great work and kept us informed at every step of the process. When we had a questions, they were very responsive. All in all, we'd recommend and use them again."

"We are new homeowners and had a hole in our septic tank made of concrete block, which was sending wastewater into the foundation/basement of the home. It was my first time using Angie's List, and I would recommend Illinois Sewer and Drain to anyone. Joe and his team of experts solved our issue immediately at an affordable price. They even went above and beyond to install a sump pump in our basement to help with the rain water. Quality work!!"

"Every things that these Plumbers did from greetings/conversation with me to the installion & clean up of my bathroom sink was just awesome. I would highly recommend them. The only negative remark toward Big Wrench Plumbing & Sewer is the Cost/Charge to do this was too high. Don't get me wrong everything else that was say/done to installed was just awesome."

Sump Pump Installation questions, answered by experts

A sewage ejector pump is necessary if you have any plumbing fixtures, such as a bathroom, laundry room, or sink, located below the level of your home's main sewer line. Standard plumbing relies on gravity to move wastewater and solid waste to the municipal sewer or septic tank. However, for fixtures located below grade (e.g., in a basement), gravity is not sufficient.

The purpose of a sewage ejector pump is to actively pump this wastewater and solid waste upward into the main sewer line. Without an ejector pump in this situation, wastewater would have no way to exit and would eventually back up, causing a sewage overflow or flooding in your basement. If all of your home's plumbing is on the main floor or higher, gravity can handle the drainage, and an ejector pump is not needed.

Most sump pumps come with power cords that can be plugged into an outlet, but there are options that can be hardwired into a home’s electrical system. Either way, it’s smart to have a backup power supply in case the electricity goes out during a storm. That way, the sump pump can keep running and removing water from the sump pit.

Yes, many modern water pumps are designed with energy efficiency in mind. Look for pumps with high efficiency ratings or those with an Energy Star certification. These pumps consume less power and can reduce your utility bills. Additionally, variable-speed pumps are more efficient since they can adjust the flow based on demand, providing significant savings over time.

Common problems include motor failure, clogged discharge lines, and float switch malfunctions. Regular maintenance prevents many issues.

Every three to four months, you should clean any dirt and debris off of your sump pump. You should also check the inlet screen (at the bottom of the pump) to make sure that it isn’t blocked. On top of that, you should deep clean your sump pump once per year—or hire a sump pump pro to do it for you.
