"Excellent!!!! We are completely satisfied. Murphy's has hit the TRIFECTA of the vinyl window replacement business with reasonable prices, a quality installation crew and a top tier window replacement product with great energy saving ratings. All of this starts with sound management. The President of the company, James (Jimmy) Murphy, will likely be your first contact. At our first meeting, Jimmy came right out the gate with a reasonable price. There was no need to haggle. There were no salesman stunt of high bid immediately followed by a "special discount". Jimmy provided a honest trustworthy quote. The customer does not pay for the overhead of an expensive commissioned salesman. The installation crew takes personal pride in doing an excellent professional job. That is a rare attribute today and quite refreshing to experience. Murphy's and Okna provide excellent labor and product warranties, respectively, which are readable and not burdened by any legalese cryptic fine print provisions. Experts recommend that the consumer get three estimate for a window replacement project. Get two estimates elsewhere, do some research and then call Murphy's. Meet with Jimmy and then breathe a sigh of relief that you found the right trustworthy contractor with the right price, a high quality dedicated installation crew, and a quality replacement window producer who isn't afraid to provide a straight-forward readable warranty."

Egress Windows questions, answered by experts

Yes, egress windows can significantly add value to a home. By making basement and attic areas safer and more livable, they allow you to market these spaces as finished living areas, which increases your property's value. Many homeowners can recover the full installation cost, with some sources citing a return on investment of around 70%. The exact value added depends on your specific home, location, and adherence to local building codes. Beyond financial value, egress windows enhance functionality by adding natural light and comfort. They are also a crucial safety feature, often mandated by building codes to serve as an emergency exit.

Egress windows require regular maintenance to ensure they function correctly. This includes cleaning the glass, inspecting the frame and well for debris, and making sure the cover or well drains properly. It is also important to check that the window sills and wells are watertight and to inspect and repair any damage to the window frame or seals to prevent leaks and maintain functionality.

Most modern egress windows installed in basements open outward into a window well, although some older homes have in-swing windows. Egress windows, like casement windows used in other parts of the home, such as bedrooms and bathrooms, may open inward, and these windows are often larger than outward-opening windows.

Yes, you absolutely need a permit to add a window to your house. Your contractor can likely obtain this permit on your behalf. Ask about this when getting quotes from multiple window contractors.

Expect excavation below grade, creating a well for access, weatherproofing, and thorough inspections during setup.
