"Love the work Brook did in our closets and pantry. Not only did she rebuild the broken closet system and replace it with a higher quality, better suited system, she made simple sense of our pantry. It is easy to keep up, even my teenage son likes it. Want to plan another project with her when we figure out what we want to do with our basement space."

"Excellent work. We purchased natural cherry cabinets in shaker style, with the panels made of solid wood rather than veneer. That is more difficult work, as each panel has to be constructed from several planks. Moreover, the clear finish would leave any flaws more visible. Simply put, the doors are beautiful--flawless in both construction and finish. They are similar in quality to custom cherry furniture we own."

"Ace Handyman Services Chicagoland did a fantastic job for me. I have them remove 2 gas, ventless fireplaces, and build a wall with a door. They also repaired and painted the walls behind fireplaces. The work was great, they got it done with in the budget, and completed the work on time. Very nice job and I strongly recommend going with Ace Handyman. Chicagoland. I'll certainly use them again for future work."

"After signing up with Servicemagic I received a call within 30 minutes. I had an unusual situation and this gentleman was right there for me. The first project was to mount our flat screen TV on the wall for me - I was afraid this job would be too trivial but he was glad to do. He even filled the holes in the wall that my husband had made. While he was here I showed him some plans for book shelves and he has agreed to give me a price and build them for me. I am thrilled I found him!"

"Javier and his team are professional, courteous and respectful. They work fast and are very efficient. I had a couple of trees cut down; several dying bushes removed and a huge tree trunk that I was sure would wind up in my living room. No damage to my property clean up was fantastic. The price quoted was very reasonable. I would highly recommend them and will be using there lawn service seasonally, and will be using them for other projects."

Closets questions, answered by experts

When storing your clothes long-term, first consider the container's breathability. While plastic bags, cardboard boxes, or vacuum sealing may be great options for short-term storage, they won’t help your clothes hold up in the long term. Breathable plastic boxes and fabric bags help with airflow, prevent mold or mildew from building up, and allow proper airflow.

Some features and upgrades you can add (some of which increase the closet’s value) are: modular shelving, motion-activated lighting, climate control, custom lighting, cigar humidors, revolving shoe racks, jewelry shelves, custom woodwork, and built-in laundry hampers. While only truly luxury closets have all of these, many custom closets have at least one special feature listed above.

Plywood offers excellent stability and strength for drawer construction. Baltic birch plywood provides a premium appearance, while standard hardwood plywood offers good value. Solid wood works well but requires more attention to grain direction and seasonal movement.

Yes, many providers offer design consultations to help optimize and maximize space, functionality, and usage. It is recommended to confirm the availability of this service with your specific installer or contractor.

A standard walk-in closet has dimensions of 7 feet by 10 feet at a minimum and an average of 100 square feet. Remember that the dimensions of the closet aren’t necessarily the usable space. This means that a 100-square-foot walk-in closet with shelves on each wall and an island may only have a walkable area of 50 square feet or less. Make sure you consider the effect of additions when you plan the room—mockups are a great idea.
