"Mike, the service tech was absolutely the best. He was polite, through and knowledgeable. He found the problem to be a leaking booster pump after testing the sump pump. The booster pump was installed less than a year ago by the sprinkler company and they were called to make repairs or replace. The service charge was all I had to pay. Believe me I was having nightmares about the cost of a new sump pump and back-up battery. I know who to call if I need any other sewer or drain service."

"Tankless water heater went on the fritz last Monday. Submitted HomeAdvisor request for quote and Rob called almost immediately. Took some pictures of the old unit and plumbing and had an all in reasonable estimate. They came out next morning (to the city no less) and installed new unit in a few hours, explained everything and tested and was within estimate. Very knowledgeable and professional. Have great hot water on demand. Wife is very happy as our old Eternal tankless struggled ever since we moved in 3 years ago. Very happy with the recommended Navien and installation from RA."

"My overall experience with Porterhouse Heating & Cooling was very good. I called and requested same-day service due to a gas leak. Porterhouse Heating & Cooling came out that day, replaced the shut-off ball valve, and tested the system after the repair was complete. Also Porterhouse Heating & Cooling ensured the tankless water heater was operable since gas to the house had been shut-off due to the gas leak. Additionally, I had them to conduct my annual preventative maintenance on both furnaces. This was my third (3rd) time using Porterhouse Heating & Cooling. I find them to be responsive, knowledgeable, and customer-focused."

"They didn't merely complete the job, they made sure that I understood the work being done and the reason for it. I'd been ripped off by plumbing "technicians". Anthony is a real life plumber who knows his stuff, and, is extremely honest and trustworthy. Hard to find that combination these days."

"Kyle. I think his name was, was fantastic. He wasn't comfortable with diagnosis s ok he called for 2nd opinion that was confirmed. He took a step further and did a water test and it was fine. He started looking at fairly new water heater. He then noticed a old water filter sitting on water heater leaking. Thanks to him his free estimate turned out saving me at least $1200. Thanks Kyle"

Customers say: True professional

"My toilet was leaking from the base after every flush.   I called Charlie's Plumbing after consulting Angie's list and seeing the excellent reviews on his previous services.  He agreed to come out the next day to analyze my problem.   Charlie and his partner (I'm sorry I forgot his name) showed up in the given time frame, removed the toilet, and immediately diagnosed the problem.  He explained to me that my floor was too low for the base of the toilet causing water to seep out when the toilet was flushed.  He explained he could temporarily fix the toilet, but unless i had a valve put in to raise the toilet to floor level, I would experience the problem again in the future.  We agreed that he would pick up the valve needed and return the next day to install it.  He showed up the next day, took time to sodder the valve so it fit perfectly.  He explained the whole process to me while he was doing it tand completed the job without a hitch.  Both he and his partner were friendly, and took the time to explain everything to me who knows nothing about plumbing.  I found Charlie and his partner to be very nice  guys, very knowledgeable and confident about their plumbing skills, and reasonable in their plumbing rates.  Charlie also said he works in heating, and I intend to have him service my heater unit in October.

Percolation Tests questions, answered by experts

Some pros may recommend covering a popcorn ceiling that tests positive for asbestos with beadboard ceiling planks or drywall. The cost to install a beadboard ceiling averages more than $5,000, but you likely will pay more than the average for the installer to deal with the asbestos safely. Installing a beadboard ceiling or new drywall will disturb the asbestos and release some microscopic fibers, so the installer will need to take precautions.

Unlike some home problems, such as water damage or pest infestations, asbestos can be very difficult to spot. Asbestos is a mineral in the form of microscopic fibers and was previously used in building materials for its bonding and fireproofing abilities. Insulation, roof shingles, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, pipe wrappings, soundproofing materials, and textured paint features like popcorn ceilings are common sources of asbestos, particularly in homes built before 1980.

Age is perhaps the biggest indicator of asbestos, as legislation passed in the 1970s labeled asbestos as dangerous and regulated its use in building materials. Signs of age in the form of wear and tear or material degradation are also indicators that asbestos fibers may be leaking into the air, but ultimately, it’s difficult to detect with the naked eye. If you have reason to suspect asbestos in your home, it’s best to hire a certified asbestos inspector.

A professional indoor air quality inspection takes anywhere from one to three hours, depending on the size of your home and the number of necessary samples. After the test, the specialist will discuss the findings, but you won’t get a full written report for 2 to 10 days, though you can ask your pro to expedite the process, if needed.

No, but it’s common that they do. Gravity furnaces weren’t terribly efficient so wrapping either the ductwork in asbestos, the furnace itself, or both, was something done regularly. This allowed the system to retain more heat. At the time, this greatly enhanced the efficiency of the furnaces but it wasn’t until later that we became aware of just how carcinogenic and dangerous asbestos could be.

Asbestos has many beneficial properties, including fire resistance, strength, and chemical resistance. It is also an excellent insulator, which is why it was used in pipe insulation and other building materials for decades. For all its benefits, asbestos is dangerous for human health, which is why it was eventually banned from use in certain products.
