"Matt F. from Chicago Locksmiths came to unlock my door that I locked myself out of. He was fast, efficient and courteous. He observed all COVID-19 safety protocols too. What else could you ask for in a locksmith. The price not outrageous either ($110). I would highly recommend Matt F. from Chicago Locksmiths."

"Handyman solutions
I just signed up the other day with Angie?s List to find a handyman and boy did it work. There was a special deal  and he scheduled the day I requested and showed up on time. It was a full day deal and he even ended up working over the time allowed to get the job done. I was well prepared and had a huge list and he got everything done :) At the end we shook hands and I said thank him, I thought he was going to charge me more for the extra time but nothing, so I gave him a big tip. I will be using him in the future and will be giving his name out. What a great experience:)) Daryl

"Choice responded quickly but the insurance plan does not pay for all doors to be re-keyed unless you have very few locks. The number of locks covered by the insurance is determined by keyholes, not doors! (Read your policy!) You will likely have to shell out some money to have this essential new-home service if you have more than four keyholes. The locksmith they called was EXCELLENT and made all our locks completely functional. We will happily hire the locksmith again (R.L Locksmith LLC). We paid $201.81 (plus another $50 for some door re-alignment not included in the re-keying benefit) and Choice paid $100 for the job."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

When you take a key to a hardware store or a locksmith for copying, you can expect the key-cutting process to take as little as 30 seconds. The key copier will review your current key to decide on the correct blank. Then, your original key and the blank are inserted into a key duplication machine to cut an exact key copy. When it’s all said and done, you can have a new key in your hand in just a couple of minutes.

Changing door locks is a task that most homeowners can accomplish on their own. Standard door knobs are quite straightforward, and even more advanced locks, like electronic or smart locks, generally come with instructions. That said, the process can be time-consuming, especially if you plan to replace multiple locks around the house. It’s also a task that you want to complete correctly, considering that it affects the security of your house. That’s why hiring a pro is often best when changing your door locks.

It is best to use a dry lubricant, such as a Teflon-based option, for door locks. Unlike popular oil-based lubricants, dry lubricants leave a non-stick, water-repellent coating that does not attract dust, dirt, and other debris. Using an oil-based lubricant can cause these particles to build up inside the lock, making it difficult to operate or even damaging the internal mechanism. You can find dry lubricants, some of which are made specifically for locks, at most hardware stores.

The cost to hire a locksmith varies depending on the service you need. Consult your locksmith about the price of your requested services before hiring for your repair or installation. Some of the most common types of locksmith services include:

  • Installing deadbolts: $40–$75

  • Rekeying: $80–$160

  • Unlocking your house: $65–$180

  • Changing locks: $50–$200

  • Installing electronic locks: $50–$500

  • Installing smart locks: $200–$800

  • Keyless locks: $50–$300

When the temps drop, sometimes you need to thaw a lock to regain access. Options include warming the key with warm water, applying a de-icing spray, or using a hair dryer on low heat. Avoid using boiling water to prevent damage. To prevent future freezing, consider installing a cover or shield over the lock to keep water and ice out. Remember to be patient and gentle during thawing to avoid damaging the lock or key. If all else fails, consult a professional locksmith.
