In many cases, you will need a building permit for your patio, but it depends on the type of patio. Generally speaking, any improvements to your land considered “permanent” will require a permit. Since a concrete patio is a permanent foundation, you will need a permit. You can make a variety of stepping stone designs yourself, including concrete, wood, mosaic, and stone. Some home improvement centers and craft supply stores sell kits to make mosaic stepping stones for around $15. If you need more than one stone, the cost of these kits can add up quickly, but they make a great weekend project and add uniqueness to your garden.

While it may be less expensive initially to lay concrete vs. pavers, the long-term expenses that come with repairing concrete may prove to be less cost-friendly than simply replacing a few damaged pavers. On top of that, stamped concrete may only last for 25 years compared to pavers, which can last over 50 years.
