"Cory and Colton arrived on the time schedule, did a survey on the apartment and quickly started moving the furniture. They were very professional and did the best they could to finish as early as possible."

"I've moved across country & in-town several times. In the past always used big well known movers. This time I chose Magpie, a local company. And, it turned out to be good decision. Roger, owner, listened to my needs/concerns; they were prompt; energetic. But, best of all..they actually came in $$wise under the estimate. With every "big name mover" I had in the past, there would be $500 to $1600 more owed than their estimate. So big KUDOS not only to Roger but his assistant, Wes, who was very efficient, friendly and polite. Thanks Magpie may your business continue to grow!!"

"All good, Truck showed up as expected on the pickup and delivery, no surprises and all went as planned. Everyone was professional and hard working. Special thanks to Sam and his team in pulling off this cross country move with no issues. Had a terrible experience with the last move with another company, damaged a lot of stuff due to carelessness. I have moved around the country quite a bit so you have to be careful when choosing a moving company and recommend if they are not on the BBB A+ rating list don't use them. Almost went with another company until I checked out the BBB review on them, nothing but horror stories so be careful choosing and I would recommend National. You do get what you pay for, watch out for low ballers."

"Jason and Adrien from Space Age Movers did a great job yesterday moving my larger furniture pieces to my new home ten miles away. The guys showed up on time and worked efficiently to load the truck. They took great care to pad and secure all the furniture pieces. There were about fifty furniture pieces for them to move. I pre-staged smaller items like kitchen chairs and end tables in the garage to make the move faster. It took them about four hours, with two hours to load, about 20 minutes to go to the new home and the remaining time to unload. We did get a slight ding on a bookcase being moved and i was given the option of having them take it for a repair at their expense or they would take $30 off my bill. I elected for the discount. I tried to limit the time these guys were on the job, so we didn't have them do any packing, assembly or disassembly, and i didn't worry terribly much about where they put the furniture within each room as it was unloaded - i just wanted to get the furniture under our new roof and get these guys back on the road. Cost was about $78/hour with no travel charge. I was moving from south Meridian to Kuna, so that could explain lack of travel charge. I would use these guys again. Thanks, Jason and Adrien!!

Moving questions, answered by experts

Moving a house is a complex and labor-intensive process, which is why it can get so pricey, particularly if it’s a large home. In some cases, the house may need to be dismantled, moved in sections, and then reassembled at the new location, which can add significantly to the cost of the move. However, it’s typically less costly than building a new home.

Focus on decluttering when downsizing to move cross-country. Selling, donating, or recycling unwanted items early in your moving process is key to your success. If you are on the fence about some items, consider storage options, or you can ship these items separately to lessen your load.

There are some household items movers won’t pack, while there are others that are important to keep on your person during the move. Don’t pack the following items:

  • Poisonous, hazardous, flammable, or explosive items, including some cleaners, matches, alcohol, and paint

  • Perishable food items

  • Pets and plants

  • Irreplaceable items and documents, such as your passport, will, and medical records

If you don’t have dividers, wrap each wine glass individually using bubble wrap or packing paper to cushion both the bowl and delicate stem. Secure the wrapping with tape and place glasses upright in a sturdy box, layering soft items like dish towels, crumpled paper, or clothing between them to prevent shifting. Fill any gaps with padding to keep glasses snug, and label the box “FRAGILE–HANDLE WITH CARE” to ensure careful handling.

To pack mugs safely for a move, start by lining the bottom of your moving box with padded material like bubble wrap. Wrap each mug individually; for a snug fit, you can tuck the ends of the bubble wrap sheet inside the mug. Place the wrapped mugs in the box, using a box with slots for extra separation if available. The key to preventing breakage is to pack the box tightly enough that the mugs cannot shift during transit. Fill any empty gaps with additional packing material. However, be careful not to pack more than 10 mugs in one box, as it can become too heavy to carry safely. Finally, be sure to label the box as “fragile” to alert movers to handle it with care.
