I recently used Hilldrup for an in-state move and I really regret it. The movers arrived late, stood around for a bit, and were both on the phone texting throughout the morning. They packed my furniture in FILTHY blankets that looked like they had been left outside. There are a lot of moving companies available, so please save yourself the hassle and avoid Hilldrup.

First day in Richmond crew did arrive on time?seemed like nice guys.  At one point they took things out of the attic, put down a piece of cardboard on to the wood steps and one guy would fling boxes down the stairs to another, I was concerned since I knew there were fragile things in some of the box's. They used two of our packed box's and laid the sofa on top to wrap it?.we do also have many crushed box's where they would stack heavy things obviously on light ones.  One guy put too much weight in to the wheel barrow and then ran with it and of course the wheel barrow broke.  After we gave them food and water bottles they left all the trash all over the house and yard.  After the movers left we still had a lot of cleaning to do and realized they had taken our vacuum cleaner and brooms.  The next morning they came to Chesapeake to move us in.  One thing I had specified with the sales person and his assistant was that we had all white carpet up and down stairs and it had to be protected.  There was nothing additional to their runners they put only in main walkways.  Of course carpet got dirty as well as railings are now loose on stair case.  One person would actually throw things up over the staircase to another.  One guy threw one of our mattresses down on our bedroom floor.  They took furniture apart to move and didn't put back together.  The freezer on the refrigerator was assembled wrong.  It almost felt like we were in romper room.  These guys obviously felt they needed to make their work into a game.  And then we fed them again only to find their trash all over yet again.  After unpacking box's there were a number of items broken and some sentimental,  scuff marks on a few pieces of furniture, my husband feels that on our our master bed screws were probably stripped.  Although we did have insurance we decided based on the deductible to let these things go, however we just realized a television was scratched on the screen.  Clearly the television as well as other art was not packed properly.  Interestingly enough there is a team leader who tries to write all inventory down as well as condition of?I read this and he wrote pretty much all of my furniture was "scratched,rubbed, marred, dented, faded, chipped, badly worn, etc.  Some things we have had for awhile are older, however he doesn't know anything about distressed furniture.  We do have pieces in excellent condition.  He was obviously looking out for his crew.  After the move the  salesman and office people want to know how it went?when you tell them they seem like it just doesn't matter to them.  I talked to one office person and suggested that we should have had her or someone else monitoring these guys during the move.  She said they usually do?.don't know what happened.  It seems to me when you're paying over $4000 they would take it seriously.  Again we are very disappointed.

Still Missing:

In Richmond:
Movers were several hours late ? partially
because their destination was spelled wrong -  ?3 ?Brides? instead of the correct 3 ?Bridges? 
Attitudes were not professional - the guy in
charge felt it necessary to apologize to my wife for the language and attitude
of the crew
Members of the (young) crew often disappeared to
use their cell phones, creating long delays ? check with the driver/man in
charge
Inventory was mishandled ? some items have no
label others have 2 labels
The truck did not have room for all of our items
and so there was another delay waiting for the 2nd truck ? by then
there was such a rush to finish that things were being put on the 2nd
truck without labels.
A job that was supposed to start at 8:00 and
take ½ day was not completed until after 4:30.
In transit:
According to
one source, the truck that carried our goods had some sort of accident. Whether
true or not, items were broken and many new boxes and 2 of 3 wardrobes that
were crushed.
Upon delivery:
In addition
to the damage done in transit, upon delivery on Monday, July 27, we discovered
that roughly 1/4 ? 1/3 of our items were missing.  It took until  Saturday, August 1 (and a number of phone
calls) before our delivery was ?complete.?

Horrible!!

Run run run!!! Far away from this moving company!!

I recently used them for a move from Richmond,Va to Indian Harbour Beach,Fl. My major complaint isn't with the packers (with one exception) or delivery persons (again, with one exception). I could live with the broken and lost items, but the office staff made the ordeal far worse by their total lack of concern. The operations department and office staff are completely incompetent and just don't care. When the sales person came to my home to give me an estimate I told her above all, my main concern was an antique mirror on a stand that had been in my family for years. I was assured this piece would be handled with great care.

Fast forward to the the day of packing. Those guys were very efficient, polite, and appeared to know their craft. However, due to an operations mistake, the truck was not large enough to hold all my belongings, mattress boxes were not included as promised, and there wasn't enough "crates" on the truck. It appeared that the process was to load all my belongings into crates marked with my name and inventory number. So my bare mattresses were loaded on the truck, items were wedged in any available nook due to the small truck, and the stand to my antique mirror was wrapped in paper and put in the cab of the truck. All of this could have been avoided with proper planning in the operations department.

When my belongings arrived in Florida, the stand to my mirror was all but collapsed. The delivery man assembled the mirror to the stand using improper weight distribution and the stand broke into several pieces. Somehow, the packers didn't include the power cord or base stand to one of the televisions even though I had purchased a packing box at Home Depot for this purpose. The packers disassembled several tables and my jewelry box. However, they failed to include the hardware with the move. I learned later that the packers were supposed to have a "utility box" so hardware would not be lost. These are not huge problems on the surface. However the office staff could have cared less about these issues and have done little to remedy them. The hardware was found but there was a delay in the mailing because the office person "couldn't find a box". Seriously? You a MOVING company. The hardware was mailed to me in an ordinary business envelope so the envelope tore and the hardware lost. Plus an incomplete addressed was used. I found a true craftsman to repair the mirror. This job couldn't have been done properly by an ordinary handyman. I had to take care of these remedies on my own. Again the office staff was no help. Yeah, I will file a claim. Have you ever seen the forms?! You need to be a contract attorney to understand them.

The hardware was replaced, the mirror repaired, and the television mounted on the wall. This could have been avoided with some simple planning, common sense, and just a little concern for the customer. Moving is extremely stressful even if you're just moving across town. I moved 800 miles from a city I'd lived in for 30 years. For the amount of money I paid Hilldrup (ALOT!), their service was far below par. For safe transport and peace of mind, please don't use this company. Like me, you'll regret your choice.

It was completely stress free! The team that moved us was friendly, helpful, fast and incredibly professional. The move took less time than estimated. All of our items were handled with care and there was not one scratch or ding in any walls or furniture. We had a couple of specialty items that we had opted to move ourselves and now wish we had let the movers do it. They would have managed these pieces( a large weaving loom and large ceramic kiln) expertly. We would definitely use these movers again. Specifically Steve Maxey and his team! Amazing!
