"Islas Masonry Solutions did an exceptional job. We needed a concrete walkway constructed immediately for my 87 year old mother. Franciso Jr. met us at my mother's home, he was on time and provided an estimate. He began the project on time, finished on time, cleared away and cleaned all debris from the yard and street. He was extremely professional and the concrete walkway is exceptional work. I highly recommend this company for any stone, brick, block or stucco work you may need. We have dealt with other contractors and Franciso treated us like family. If he you can make an 87 year old mother, grand-mother and great grandmother happy, you are the REAL deal. Excellent work and Exceptional Service!"

Artisan masonry is professional , and will also be upfront on what’s needed and what’s not;Saved me a good deal of money, where other companies just tried to get as much as they could out of me. "I waited a few months before posting my review to test the finished product. All I can say is incredible from start to finish to performance! Jordan and Jim are two of the most honest people I have ever met. The estimate process went so smoothly. No pressure, no overselling and scare tactics I had with other large companies. Jordan listened and offered real solutions. In fact they turned out to be over $15K less than the next bidder. Jim who also owns the company and his crew showed up on time. Worked their butts off and explained exactly what and why they were doing certain things.Just another level of transparency. They put in french drains, concrete walls to support the compromised brick ones in the basement. Then two new sump pumps one is a no power required backup, a pump to remove the washing machine water into the sewer line instead of the sump pump. The also wrapped the basement, crawlspace, installed a new crawlspace door. All in two days! The house is so much nicer and dryer. My AC does not run as often, the basement is dry. We used to get water after every rain storm. We have had several heavy downpours and not one single drop of water! I highly recommend them. Fair and honest people!"

Customers say: Quick response

"From start to finish LJIA masonry was first rate. They came and discussed what needed to be done, provided a detailed quote and kept us up to date on starting times and what they needed from us to have the materials needed. The crew arrived on time (a little early actually) started promptly, worked efficiently and could not have been more courteous and respectful of our property. The attention to detail was exemplary. When finished, the crew went above and beyond in the clean up. Highly recommended."

"JDB Construction was an excellent choice to repair our stone wall and make other concrete repairs to the driveway. They did an excellent and detailed project on our driveway stone wall, and cleaned up daily during the week long job. The owner is very professional and did almost the entire project himself. I highly recommend this firm."

"This is actually the 2nt time we had work done by Quentin at Chimney Solutions. First, installing a cap on a fireplace chimney last year (including sweep etc), second repacking a cap on a furnace exhaust pipe. Both times it was absolutely professional and an enjoyable experience. Quentin went the extra mile to make the job’s result look fantastic. We highly recommend Chimney Solutions and Quentin’s really great!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

There are many things to look for when buying a brick house. Here are some of the key things you should pay close attention to.

  • Lintels: Look for cracks, holes, displacement, or corrosion

  • Mortar: Check to see if the mortar is old and crumbling, in need of repointing, or new. Also check to see if the mortar has a professional finish.

  • Walls: Check along each side of the house. If a wall is bowing outward, this indicates a severe issue such as foundation damage or that the walls are ready to fall.

  • Cracks: If there are stair step cracks in the brickwork, this indicates an unstable foundation.

If your old bricks are in decent condition and you have the space to store them where they’ll be protected from the elements, keeping old bricks is often worthwhile. You’d spend anywhere from $70 to a few hundred dollars to have them removed from your property, in which case you won’t be able to use them for future projects. Holding on to old bricks in good condition means you can use them later for other DIY projects, potentially saving yourself some money on disposal and new materials down the road.

Granite is the strongest commercially available stone houses are built from. It’s also more commonly available, which means transport costs aren’t as high because a granite quarry isn’t too far from a build site. Limestone and sandstone are popular materials as well, but they aren’t as strong or weather-resistant as granite.

Choose from an abundance of natural and synthetic options when perfecting your hardscape design. Stone veneer costs a bit less, holds up against the tests of time and weather, and also works best in curves and complex walls.

Natural stone, however, provides an organic look to a lawn while providing just as much strength as veneer. Don't forget you can chat with your mason about other common wall materials like brick, cinderblock, and concrete.

Drilling into brick or mortar requires the use of a masonry drill bit. Masonry drill bits appear similar to standard drill bits except for the leading tip of the bit. The tip has a bulky carbide arrow-shaped end slightly larger than the rest of the bit shaft. Standard or high-speed drill bits designed for making holes in wood or metal don’t have the ruggedness or design shape you need to drill into brick. They may not go through the brick at all, and if they do, they’re more likely to overheat, crack, or dull before you finish drilling.
