"I called Pillar and they answered immediately. I asked them to schedule a service call for a check-up for my office unit. Quinton came out professional dressed came right in and got started. He told me he would recommend the service plan for my business so they could keep an eye on my unit to reduce any breakdowns. I was very impressed about his professionalism and knowledge of the equipment. I now have a peace of mind getting ready for the summer months Bill Roberts CEO Bill Roberts Electrical, Inc. "Electrical Fixers has installed a new modern light fixture in our home as well as change the bulb of an outdoor ceiling fan that had an unusual globe that seemed impossible to screw off. I was first impressed by how prompt they were in making the appointment and making us feel our need was important. Then I was well pleased with the expertise of the electrician and how he finished the job with ease. The work ethic and courtesy is by far the best I have experienced with an electrician. Just can't beat all of this in one! Highly recommend."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

You should know the main components of an air conditioner: the condenser coils, evaporator coils, drip pan, AC filter, ducts, and refrigerant. Each part plays a key role in the performance and safety of your AC system. When tracking the source of AC issues or odors, it helps to know where to look. Your outdoor unit houses your condenser coils, fan, and compressor. Your indoor unit houses your evaporator coils, drain lines, and filter, and it connects to your ductwork.

As a general rule, you should have your HVAC system professionally serviced at least once a year, though it's best to follow the manufacturer's specific recommendations. Many experts suggest twice-yearly maintenance: once in the spring for the cooling system and once in the fall for the heating system. This is especially recommended for older units, systems with recurring issues, or heat pumps that provide both heating and cooling. Regular service, which can cost between $100 and $550, keeps the system running efficiently, helps prevent costly future repairs, and saves money on utility bills.

AC evaporator coils should be cleaned at least once per year to keep your unit in good condition. For optimal performance, consider cleaning them twice a year—once before and once after the main cooling season. More frequent cleanings may be necessary for older systems, units with performance issues, or those in climates with high levels of humidity, dust, and dirt.

Yes, it’s important to turn off your AC sometimes to give it a break and prevent it from freezing up. If your AC runs all the time, your system’s parts will wear down quicker, which may mean that you need to replace it sooner. Plus, using your AC constantly uses more electricity and leads to higher energy bills.

Window AC units use a fair amount of electricity, but significantly less than central AC systems. Because they are more energy-efficient for cooling individual rooms or small spaces, their usage is comparatively low. On average, a window AC unit consumes between 500 and 1,400 watts, while a central AC system uses over 3,500 watts—meaning a window unit uses about one-third of the energy. This typically translates to a monthly running cost of $15 to $40, although this can vary depending on external factors.
