"The SES Team is phenomenal. They offer turnkey solutions that exceeded our widest expectations. We had remote ceiling fans installed where none existed, SMART landscape and home lighting installed to beautify the property that is WiFi controlled, and a gas and propane generator installed to keep us safe should electrical power be lost. SES has a team of highly technical and competent people who offer affordable, intelligent, practical, and high quality electrical services options that in over 40 years we've never experienced with any electrical contractor. Well done Forrest and the entire SES Team!"

"The team of Bill, Harry and Xavier with Space Coast Electric were absolutely the best contractor that we have worked with in a very long time. From the first visit with Bill detailing what we needed done all the way through the generator installation (They sub-contracted the LP Gas portion) everything went very well considering that MANY people were involved. Now, Thanks to them we have peace of mind should a power outage occur. The second job went very well too!!-They ran power to our 12x30 detached garage AND installed a dedicated 50amp service for our RV so we can plug IT in and run the a/c to keep the humidity down!! All in all we are very pleased with all phases of both jobs that were done, HIGHLY recommend the guys at Space Coast Electric!"

"I'm not one to review or rate any product or service since my name is also attached. AIO was outstanding in every aspect of removing existing electric and installing new service and complete wiring from top to bottom .Their pricing beat all others, and they delivered as promised with excellent communication with exactly what was occurring within each step. The entire process was great. You owe it to yourselve to talk to AOI. Sincerely, Keith Rose."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Most homeowners won't be able to claim a home generator as a tax write-off. However, a whole-house generator may be tax-deductible in certain situations depending on its purpose. For instance, if it's needed to power essential medical equipment, it may qualify as a medical expense deduction. Also, in some cases, businesses can deduct a generator as a business expense if it supports operations. Always consult a tax professional to determine eligibility based on your specific circumstances and the applicable IRS regulations.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

As a safety measure, you should always turn off the main breaker while operating your generator’s backup breaker. In addition, you should also switch off all appliance breakers so you don't have a power surge when the main breaker turns back on. And finally, turning off the main breaker prevents back-feeding, which endangers utility workers with the risk of electrocution. Back-feeding could also destroy the electrical circuits of your neighbors if they use the same power network.

If you’re deciding between a solar battery versus a generator for the best backup power solution, you can take a few factors into consideration. Solar batteries are quiet while generators can be quite loud. Generators have a lower up-front cost, but they require fuel and ongoing maintenance while solar batteries are more expensive but don’t have many ongoing costs.

It might seem counterintuitive, but installing a generator transfer switch will save you money in the long run. While you’ll have to pay between $400 and $2,500 to have the transfer switch installed, you’ll recoup that amount later on when you don’t have to pay for expensive repairs to your appliances, devices, and electrical system that may have burned out, overloaded, or stopped working due to a sudden loss of power or an incorrect hook up of a generator to your home
