This is a small business started in 1998. We do fine homes, quality additions, and all types of masonry.

"Misrepresented himself as an experienced full time contractor. Not the case. He has another day job, he was not committed to my job. He immediately started complaining that it was underbid, although we met and reviewed the plans before beginning, he never rebid any changes. He paid himself from the draws and ran short to pay the subs to complete the job. He never accounted for over 3500.00 in money paid to him. The job is 2 months behind the estimated completion date. I am left to finish the job and pay the subs with the last draw that I withheld however it does not cover the cost and I have to make up the difference. Even his own masonry work was done very sloppy and inaccurate. I would not hire him again or recommend his services."

"Unfortunately I can not recommend this company. The owner lives in my neighborhood and is a friendly guy with good pricing, so I hired them for multiple projects around my house. There is a serious lack of communication between the laborers and the management. The windows as a product are great (the price was fair also), but they did not patch any of the stucco that they knocked off pr fix drywall they scratched and dented. As the person installing the windows, wouldn't you note any areas that you damaged during install, relay that to the management, and schedule a time to come back and fix it? I consider that good business practice. The Paver patio and screened porch is a different story. First off, I was never presented with a blueprint or plan for the porch. I didn't know the design and materials. I trusted that I would have a nice, up to date, functional porch. What I got is bare bones. There is not even a splash guard to keep the rain from splashing inside the porch when it rains. I grew up in Florida and have had screened porches on all of my houses. That is an essential component of a screened porch. The overall craftsmanship of the construction of the porch was terrible. I had to call them back on 3 separate occasions to tighten bolts, cover scratches, repair screens, and add end caps to areas. The workers who installed the porch littered my back yard with cigarette butts (I have children) and a concrete washout, which stayed there until long after the project was finished. They didn't cut the aluminum to the proper size, so I had to have them come and caulk lots of joints. Their answer for everything was to add caulk to it. I would have rather paid more for a more sturdy porch, that is done right the first time by a more skilled laborer. To be fair, they made multiple attempts to mitigate the issues that I brought to them. Unfortunately, the craftsmanship behind the installation and materials that they used made it impossible to remedy the situation fully. I still have stucco chips, drywall scratches, and a porch covered in caulk. I feel it necessary to share my experience. Nothing personal against the owners or managers. They tried. Their prices are fair, but the labor and skill that you get on the back end if by far sub-par. For the amount of money I spent with them, I expected much more."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Framing tends to be the longest step in the construction process, especially for larger homes. It takes anywhere from one week to a couple of months, depending on the house size, the number of people on the construction crew, and the time of year. The design stage often takes a long time, too. Some people spend months or even years contemplating their house’s size, layout, and materials before construction begins.

Building a house is generally more expensive upfront than moving an existing one. However, the total cost depends on factors such as location, size, materials, labor, and permits. Moving a house can incur significant expenses for transportation, permits, site preparation, and renovations. On the other hand, building a new house allows for customization and may have lower long-term maintenance costs.

Most contractors aim for about a 20% profit on a job, leaving themselves room for unexpected expenses or delays. After accounting for materials, labor, and insurance, the profit margin for most contractors is between 10% and 20%. Fluctuating costs of materials and labor affect the ultimate percentage.

You can’t add home addition costs to an existing mortgage, but you can include them in a new mortgage if you take out a rehab loan. Rehab loans—FHA-backed 203k loans and conventional rehab loans—are for more than the value of a property, and the excess is meant to cover the cost of a renovation or home addition.

It is a good idea to check in with your local city and state regulations before committing to building a shipping container home no matter where you live. This concept is pretty new across the country, and many places won’t let you build one.

The International Code Council (ICC) offers guidelines for home builders on the safe use of ISO intermodal shipping containers repurposed as building components, which can be helpful to review when planning or designing a shipping container home.
