"The breaker to my pool pump tripped and wouldn't turn back on. I had a guy coming to check the pump motor but wanted an electrician to check the breaker. I wound up having 2 techs from Mr Sparky come here so will review each of them. The first guy, Robert, was supposed to give us a free estimate for fixing the problem if it was electrical. He pulled the AC breaker and said it was burned, but didn't pull the pump breaker. Said he had no idea why the breaker wouldn't turn on. He charged me $167 for 'diagnostics' which consisted of looking at the wires to the for pump switches, removing the pump motor end cap to look at those wires, and opening the stone catcher basket (no idea why). Back inside, the pump breaker DID turn on, but again, he didn't know why. Turned the pump on but it shut off - twice. Then he sat at my table tapping on his tablet and ignoring me for 10-15 minutes as I stood there with my credit card, waiting to pay the $167. Finally he showed me 3 options on his tablet; one to replace all the breakers and 2 choices for installing a new breaker box outside, pricing up to $10K. We passed... When he left I looked at the troubleshooting manual for the pool pump. It said if the motor shuts off check for low voltage or power drop. So I called their office, explained the situation, and tried to get Robert to come back to check the voltage at the pump. Robert called me back but refused to return. When the office called later to see if I was happy with the service I explained it all and they scheduled another tech, Chris, to come the next day. Chris was very polite, respectful and professional. He checked the voltage at the pump (which was fine) and agreed we should replace the old breakers and add a surge protector, but said there was no need to spend $10K to put the breaker box outside. He said the AC breaker was NOT burned, but he did see evidence of old wires causing arcing as well as the wrong size breaker in one spot, and pointed out that we should have 2 ground rods outside besides grounding to the water main. (Robert never mentioned these) Chris did a much more thorough job of checking everything and it was all included in the $167 I had already paid. The difference between these two techs was such that I actually wondered if it was a "good cop/bad cop" ploy so I would believe what the "good" guy said and happily purchase service from him. If it was, it worked. We had Chris come back to replace all the old breakers, install a surge protector, and put in the grounding rods. Total cost was a little over $3K. As for appointment times.. The first appointment was set for 2-6 pm and they said the tech would call to let me know when he was on his way, which he did. The second appointment was 12-4 pm but he didn't call ahead, saying his ipad wouldn't let him make the call. The third appointment was supposed to be afternoon also but the email I received gave the time as 8 am - 6 pm. I called their office and the guy I spoke with said he'd add a note that I wouldn't be home until 2 pm. So with no call ahead of time I was surprised when Chris and his helper came to my door at noon. Not a big issue (as it would have been if they'd arrived at 8 am) but good to note if scheduling is important to you. The office staff is very friendly and makes you feel as though customer satisfaction is a priority. I didn't bother having another company come out to give me a quote so I can't say whether their pricing was high, low or average. But at least I know we have all new breakers now plus proper grounding and a surge protector, and I feel confident that Chris did all the work properly. Overall, I would have given Mr Sparky an F rating based on my experience with Robert, and still deducted one letter because of him. But if Chris had been the only tech we saw I would have rated them an A."

"I hired this company to put in a generator after seeing their commercials on TV, and seeing all the high reviews online. I can say that my experience has been horrible. First off, the permitting process took months, just to get the approval to install the generator. After the install, city permitting workers came out countless times sighting issues that needed to be resolved that seemingly didn’t get resolved because they’d get flagged again for the same issues. The biggest being they installed the generator too close to the natural gas line, which caused them to move the generator over about 18 inches and needing to install a giant junction box on the outside wall of my house. Not a great look. During the install and clearing permits, it’s almost impossible to get ahold of anyone to get a status update. I’d call and leave messages, email – repeatedly – before I’d finally get someone to reply. Fast forward a year, I discovered they installed one of the junction boxes incorrectly to my pool heater, causing it to fill up with water… so another repair. Now after the first year they hit you with a $600 per year contract to continue to monitor the generator for issues. Even after I signed it, I still get an email asking me to sign up every couple of weeks.. I’ve responded a dozen times telling them I’ve signed up for the monitoring program and to stop emailing me. Now the icing on the cake. I’m paying $600 a year for them to 'monitor' for problems. Today we lost power and the generator didn’t turn on. Looked at my mobile app, and it shows the cell signal used to monitor the generator isn’t working. I open the generator and the control panel that runs the entire system is blank and not working. Obviously a major problem… and isn’t that why I’m paying $600 a year for Reliable to monitor for problems and fix them before they cause an issue? This monitoring program is a scam. If they were actually monitoring the system they would've seen that my generator didn't exercise on Monday as scheduled, and that I've been offline over a week! Calling to ask that question just got me on the line with some low level customer service person, who can’t do anything but set an appointment a week from now. If you’re going to install a generator, look elsewhere."

"Replaced a ceiling light with a different one that did not have the same base pattern and left a hole that I now have to repair and paint. On top of that, they took my old fixture ( which was still in great shape ) without my permission! The next morning when I asked that it be returned I was told that they already disposed of it! They convinced me to reinstall the wiring for my hot water heater stating that it was not in code (and it was not cheap). When my husband saw it he was extremely upset saying that they took advantage of me because I was a woman and that our hot water heater wiring did not apply to that code because of the age of the house. They redid my electrical panel box and I had to insist that they label the breakers which they were very hesitant to do. They jotted them down on the door, most of them, but their hurried scribbling is very difficult to read. Their customer service STINKS! Do not bother calling to complain!"

In many cases, yes. There are models called dual-fuel generators and fuel switches, but only between certain types of fuel. For example, with the right setup you can convert a generator from natural gas to propane. Some allow switching between diesel and gasoline. There are even tri-fuel generators available in some cases, which adds a large layer of security if you are worried about fuel availability in times of crisis. Always check your generator capabilities and manual instructions before trying to switch fuels. Some generators can use another fuel but may need a fuel conversion kit to prep them first.

It might seem counterintuitive, but installing a generator transfer switch will save you money in the long run. While you’ll have to pay between $400 and $2,500 to have the transfer switch installed, you’ll recoup that amount later on when you don’t have to pay for expensive repairs to your appliances, devices, and electrical system that may have burned out, overloaded, or stopped working due to a sudden loss of power or an incorrect hook up of a generator to your home

It’s usually better to repair your generator if it isn’t working properly, as it will typically be much more affordable and should yield similar results. Generator repairs cost around $300 on average, while installing a new whole-house generator costs around $5,000 on average. The only exception is if you know your generator is reaching the end of its useful life, usually between 30 and 40 years. If you have an older generator, you could face multiple repairs in the coming years, which might mean that a full replacement will be more cost-effective over time.

In some situations, yes. Never try to put biofuel into any home generator without checking the specifics first. If a generator has the ability to run on diesel, it can also run pure biofuel (the clear kind made from seed oils, for example).
