My roof was nearing the end of life, 14 years old, about the average age for shingle roof in Florida.   I was interested in a long lasting, low to no maintenance roof.  In researching, I came across Solar Shield?s web site and was very impressed with the product line they offered.  I notice they were listed on Angie?s List, so I joined Angie?s List just so I could read the reviews.  All of Solar Shield?s reviews were positive.  Made appointment to get an estimate.  Luke arrived on time and did a great job in describing the different options available from the low end to the high end with life time warranty.   I also had an appointment scheduled with a national home supply chain for the same day (2 hours apart).  No comparison on the sales/estimate process, Luke was through in his presentation, climb on the roof to take measurement, were the other sales person spent more time try to talk me out of a metal roof and only paced the house off for measurement.  10 square more than Luke?s measurements.  Even know the cost from Solar Shield was a little more for their patented metal roof system with a life time warranty then the other options. I chose to go with Solar Shield patented system based on Luke?s low pressure approach and reviews on Angie?s List.   The materials were delivered the day before scheduled installation, crew showed up at a reasonable start time (around 8 am) introduced themselves, explained what the plan was and got to work.   During the entire installation time (2 ½ days) they constantly keep the area clean and organized.  The workmanship was outstanding the end-product look fantastic and the best part is the Lifetime Warranty  on product and workmanship,  means I should never have to worry about the roof again.  The extra cost for their patented system in my opinion is monies well spent.   I have another property and when the roof on it requires to be replaced the 1st company I am calling is Solar Shield.  My wife is also extremely pleased with the way the roof looks and the way Frank and his crew performed the installation.   Thank you for making this a stress free project.  Highly recommend them to anyone looking for a metal roof, their professionalism is top notch.

"Roberto was the technician and he was very professional, polite, and personable. He inspected the rest of our system and told us things that needed to be changed or repaired. He showed me pictures of everything. Everything he told me about was accurate. He quoted me a price for R38 insulation , Some of our ducts were plastic and he recommended them to be changed. I agreed completely and didn't know they were plastic. I would have had them done the work but I had no price comparisons to make and besides I didn't have the money right then. So he just finished the vent cleaning and left his card. He did a great job on the vent cleaning and was happy with the work."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

While there are many different kinds of insulation, spray foam, blown-in, foam board, and batt and roll are the four types you’re most likely to see. That doesn’t mean they’re alike, though. Each one varies drastically in terms of cost, materials used, and how they’re installed—not to mention, how well they limit heat transfer.

Most insulation lasts 15 to 20 years, but it really depends on the type of insulation. Spray foam is a permanent insulation material that can last up to 100 years. Fiberglass and cellulose typically settle, shift, or deteriorate around 15 years. Once your insulation reaches the 15-year mark, it's time to check it for signs of needing to be replaced.

One of the clearest signs that your insulation isn’t working as well as it should be is a noticeable difference in temperature throughout your home. One room might feel icy while another is hot as Arizona—this indicates that some parts of your home are either retaining or losing heat more than others. Additionally, a sudden increase in your energy bills, evidence of pests or rodents, or evident water damage are other signals that warrant a thorough inspection of your insulation and potential replacement.

Each of the three types of wool insulation has particular disadvantages. While their R-value is higher, they all cost more than fiberglass versions. Installing mineral wool and sheep wool requires protective gear. Because of its vulnerability to insects, chemicals are used in its production. Hemp wool is more costly to install than other types because additional tools and labor are involved.

You do not always need to remove old insulation before adding new. If the existing insulation is in good condition—not wet, physically damaged, moldy, or infested with pests—you can add new insulation directly on top of it for a compounding effect. You can also mix different types, such as adding blown-in insulation around existing fiberglass batts.

However, removal is recommended if the old insulation is compromised by water damage or pests. You should also remove it if you plan to install a different type of insulation, like switching from roll or batt insulation to spray foam. If the existing insulation is very old or damaged, you will likely get more benefit from removing it and starting fresh.
