Customers say: Quality work

"The owner, Theo Brown came over right away and gave an honest bid to do the project. Others asked twice as much! His crew came quickly and did a careful, professional removal and clean up. They are a great group of guys that work hard and are just really good. It could not have been done any better. Most companies that are on Angie's list are too expensive, but no ASAP."

"We dealt directly with Steve. He 100% knows what he's doing. The city hires him for all kinds of things. We checked out quite a few competitors for water softener prices. Really no comparison. We ended up buying a water softener on Craig's List and then purchased the whole house filtration. Steve exceeded our expectations on the installation. YES I would use him again. Very knowledgable and competitive pricing."

"I had Rooter One install my new kitchen faucet. After about 3 weeks I noticed a very slight leak. I called Rooter One on New Years Day and Lawrence came out the very next day. Lawrence found the cause of the leak and he fixed it. The leak was caused by the faucet mounting being smaller than the original."

"I was tired of my old plumbing company. I had used them for years, paid through the nose and the problems were only partially fixed. I had heard of Angie's list a few years back when I read a story about the company and figured what the heck. There has to be a plumber in there that other's have used that they liked. I saw Abaco Plumbing and everyone gave it high ratings, so I called about two clogged drains that were slow in draining on Friday night. Boyce asked if I needed it fixed that night, but I said it could wait until Monday. Monday morning he called at 8:45 and was their by 9:15 AM. The shower drain was quick to fix but the sink required a snake to go almost to the septic tank to clear. I then asked about the toilet handle that you had to hold down to flush. Boyce looked at it and said I would need to replace the flush valve. He said that it would be $15 for the part and asked if that was OK. He also suggested replacing the ballcock since it wasn't seating correctly. He went to his truck and came back saying he didn't have the part with him, but he would go get it and not charge us for an additional service call. He came back later and fixed the toilet. I have had this toilet fixed for the same problem a few times in the past. The other plumbing company (initials P.D.) never fixed the problem correctly and charged 3 times the price. Abaco Plumbing fixed it and the I would definitely use their services again. He also did something which I haven't heard from a contractor in years. He thanked me for the business. I never thought that I would rave about a toilet flushing, but it has never worked this well before. I was so happy with the end result that I went to work telling my co-workers that I finally found a reputable plumber to use!"

Foundation Drain Installation questions, answered by experts

A sump pump's lifespan is typically 7 to 10 years, though the general range can be anywhere from 5 to 15 years. The specific type of pump is a major factor: pedestal sump pumps last an average of 20 to 25 years, whereas submersible sump pumps last between 5 and 15 years. While pedestal pumps are less expensive to service, they are also louder and more prone to clogging.

Several other factors influence longevity, including the pump's quality, usage frequency, and maintenance schedule. A high-quality pump that is well-maintained in a dry climate may last for two decades, while a lower-quality, poorly maintained pump in an area with a high water table or frequent flooding may fail in six years or less.

Regular maintenance, including annual inspections and tuneups from a professional, can significantly extend the pump's life. It is time to consider a replacement if your sump pump runs constantly, cycles frequently, shows visible rust or corrosion, or trips a circuit breaker. As a preventative measure, many homeowners replace their pumps every eight years. It's also worth noting that a manufacturer's warranty can indicate expected lifespan, and some home insurance policies may not cover water damage from a pump that is past its recommended replacement date.

Yes, many people choose to bury their sump pump discharge pipes. When you leave the pipe visible in your yard, you might trip over it or accidentally damage it with your lawn mower. Plus, from an aesthetic perspective, hiding the discharge line underground looks nicer than leaving it out in the open. Before burying a sump pump pipe, review your local building codes to make sure your installation is compliant.

Basements with persistent moisture problems or flooding shouldn’t be finished until the moisture issues have been fixed. In addition, if your foundation is cracked, you have unmitigated radon levels, or you have asbestos or lead pipes, remediate the underlying problem before finishing your basement. Turning a basement into living space before fixing these issues can lead to serious health risks or structural damage.

The best basement waterproofing method depends on the specific issue causing the water intrusion. For minor problems, simple solutions like installing a properly functioning gutter system to direct runoff away and grading the soil to slope away from your foundation can be effective.

If you have more significant water problems, the solution will need to be more robust:

  • For standing water on the basement floor, a floor drain or a sump pump system may be the best solution.

  • For water pooling around the foundation, installing an exterior French drain can intercept water before it reaches the basement walls.

Other effective waterproofing methods, which can be used depending on your home's specific needs, climate, and soil type, include sealing the interior walls, landscape alteration, installing interior drainage systems, and using a dehumidification system to control moisture levels.

A sump pump is one of the most common ways to get excess moisture out of your home, but it’s not the only way. If your home doesn't have a sump pump, other options to get excess water out of the basement include trash pumps, submersible pumps, service pumps, and hand-crank pumps. However, it’s worth calling a pro in to assess your situation and potentially install a sump pump for you.
