My name is Phil and I had decided to start my own business after working for General Contractors for about 10 years which means that I know what is required by code in most situations. I have experience in most trades and areas of the home from changing an outlet to renovating a bathroom. Some of the categories I selected are a bit more broad than what I actually work on. Roofing for example: Fascia/Soffit/minor repairs only. PLEASE DO NOT ask me to do a cheap build because I will not do it. My name and reputation mean a lot to me. I cannot build or repair something that I know won't last a long time. I will do everything right the first time and with great attention to detail at a fair price. If you give me the opportunity to work for you, you will never want to call anyone else besides "Phil" ever again. I do not drink alcohol or use drugs of any kind while on the job. I keep your home as clean as possible and I respect your belongings. I look forward to working with you. I'm giving you below average pricing and the best results so please spend a little more for quality materials. All I can do is try to steer you in the right direction but it's your choice in the end. I cannot count how many times a client has come back to me after rejecting my estimate and asking me to try to fix what has been done. I will not be the cheapest nor the highest priced but you will never have to do it again. My rates are usually around the 50$ per hour range. Many others are in the 75-100$ per hour or higher range especially when you start thinking about using a General Contractor. Contractors take 300-500$ per day for themselves and charge 150-250 per day for laborers. The contractors are usually not even the ones doing any of the actual work and they are 10-20% of the overall cost of your project!!!!

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can usually add a pocket door to an existing wall if it’s not load-bearing. If you don’t know, check with a professional. Installing a pocket door on a non-load-bearing interior wall is easiest, with no hidden electrical, plumbing, or ductwork. If you don’t know how to check this, hiring a pro to check for you or completing the project is best.

If you're comfortable hanging drywall yourself, you may be comfortable finishing it. But it's worth noting that finishing drywall adds several steps to the process and a lot of waiting time. Hiring a drywall installer may be the way to go if you'd rather spend your time doing other things or are nervous about leaving a rough surface.

While you can put new drywall over old drywall, it’s not always the best option. In some cases, drywalling over drywall can make it harder to find wires and pipes behind your walls and conceal more serious problems with your walls. It can also make the room smaller. On the plus side, putting drywall over drywall can improve soundproofing and insulation. Plus, it’s often less expensive than tearing down and adding new drywall.

You should leave a gap between drywall sheets because they naturally expand and contract along with the building framing as temperature and humidity change. Most pro drywall installers leave a gap of about ⅛ inch between drywall sheets, allowing the sheets to expand, contract, and shift without cracking or becoming damaged. If you don’t leave enough gaps between slabs, the edges will press against each other when they expand, and the pressure can cause visible cracks.

The two most common types of drywall are ½-inch and ⅝-inch thick white or gray drywall. Most walls are ⅝-inch thick because the drywall is slightly more resistant to damage and it helps dampen sound considerably. It’s also much heavier, which is why most ceilings are ½-inch thick. There are special use cases where you want to use ⅝-inch thick drywall for ceilings, such as between a garage and living space, and the ceiling above a finished basement.
