"Oscar was very friendly and professional, showed up on time, and provided an honest price. The project was to finish drywall and install vinyl flooring for a children's playroom, in a small area underneath stairs."

"Good guys. They went above and beyond what I hired them to do initially. They were very meticulous in their work and made sure to follow up and ensure that their repairs were holding up well. They fixed outside window sills, removed baseboards and accompanying drywall to destroy the mold behind them, painted a whole bathroom, fixed roof fascia and a leak into the attic which led to rotting wood and installed a gutter spout to keep water from accumulating and recreating the problem. Furthermore they patched up issues with drywall repaired a couple of door frames that had issues with rotten wood. Finally they placed fresh cement to fill holes in the exterior walls of the house that had damage. The cost of all the repairs were high but at the same time it was necessary."

"I hired them to install and fix a lot of areas of drywall in my house. They also did a recessed ceiling. Their work was very high quality, the professionals were very attentive and professional. That is from the person answering the phone all to way to the people doing the work. I highly recommend them."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Furring strips, thin strips of wood or metal, are not always required for ceiling drywall installation. If the ceiling surface is even and in good condition, drywall can be directly attached to the ceiling joists using screws. However, furring strips become essential when dealing with irregular surfaces or when additional insulation or soundproofing is needed. They create a level substrate for attaching the drywall. Ultimately, the decision to use furring strips depends on the condition of the existing ceiling and the specific requirements of the project.

If you’re installing new drywall, you may need to skim coat the drywall first for a smooth finish and to allow the primer to adhere to the wall. It’s only necessary if there are imperfections in your drywall due to issues with the studs or improper drywall installation. If you’re refreshing existing walls, you may want to skim coat if there are imperfections across the wall. As an alternative, you can repair your drywall and sand it for a smooth finish before painting.

Mudding drywall is a DIY-friendly project, but patience and practice are required for perfection. If you’re working in a highly visible area and want the best possible finish, hiring a professional drywaller is worth the cost. Pros have the tools and know-how to ensure a smooth surface with fewer sanding sessions and less cleanup.

In most cases, no, you won’t need a permit to replace drywall. If you’re changing the floorplan of your home by adding or removing walls during the drywall project, then you might need a permit, but replacement or repairs usually doesn’t require a permit. Your drywall professional should be able to confirm whether or not a permit is required for your project. If it is, it’s likely to add between $50 and $150 to your total cost. Keep in mind that you will need permits if you plan to install new electrical wiring or plumbing lines behind your new drywall.

The best way to make long, straight cuts is to use a utility knife and a T-square to score the sheet, snap along the score, and then finish the cut by cutting through the paper on the opposite side with the utility knife. If you’re making small cuts, curved cuts, or cutouts for electrical boxes or light fixtures, you can use a manual jab saw to keep costs down, but an electric spiral saw or oscillating multi-tool will get the cleanest, fastest cuts possible.
